The Changing Sources of Water.

Long time ago, probably when I was not yet born. I read and discovered that water was primarily sourced from rainfall, streams, River or Lake. In fact Settlement, at those times settle because of presence of water few kilometers away or even around the water for domestic and commercial use.

Water is a chemical substance composed of hydrogen and oxygen existing in gaseous, liquid and solid states. (Vapour, water, ice block)

Other reasons for settlement if not water could be as a result of fertile land or territorial expansion.

Nowadays, there are various sources of water. Water is now less relevant for settlement because water can be got from different sources example Groundwater, Well, Rainwater harvest, Surface water, Snow melt, River etc.

However, there is two major sources of water which are Surface and Ground water.

Here in Enugu, it is very difficult to get soft underground water probably because of large amount coal deposit beneath the soil.

Nevertheless, water is sourced from underground water, which is gotten from well though it is hard water (contains high ion of calcium and magnesium) it also contains a little bit of coal.

well water is sourced from underground water but during dry season the underground water level is usually low during but overwhelmingly high during raining season almost reaching the brim, thus, the presence of the two holes to discharge overflow.

Soft water is sourced here by Reservoir (Tank Reservoir or Cistern) which could be built with concrete or steel. This soft water is sourced directly from rainfall, treated and stored, distributed to various hostels for domestic use only.

Also soft water can be sourced here in Enugu in a neighbouring town Ngwo where soft underground water I.e pipe borne water (bore-hole) is found. This water is transported by Tanker to Enugu Municipals and Towns for domestic uses.

It is imperative that water is one of the vital element needed in our day to day activities as a living being.

Although all the natural sources of water are constantly replenished through water cycles. We still need to be conservative on How we use water.

P.S. Try to not waste water in your home by using flow regulators and collect rainwater for use in your garden. There are several ways to keep the natural water cycle flowing, if we are careful in how we use the water we have access to today.

Thanks

Let me ask @Ant_Bad_Yogi @OlgaKlimchik @katydarhel @MukulR @Nyainurjanah @Anonymous @SabbirShawon @Izumi @fafaguru how is water sourced in your locality?

Hello @NkemNwobu @Nyainurjanah @OlgaKlimchik read the post again, some of my writeup got missing after posting, just edited it to add the relevant information.

@Muhammad_Usman I forgot to tag you yet again. How is water source in your place?

Thanks. :slightly_smiling_face:

@Austinelewex You raised a very important topic. All water on the planet is distributed unevenly. Belarus has enough precipitation during the year, and sometimes even excessively. Groundwater is not deep, vast swamps are not rare. Some years ago people even drained the swamps, but it led more to negative consequences, so they swamp the swamps again.

We use water from underground wells in Minsk and purified water from rivers in places where underground wells are absent.

It is interesting to compare the familiar picture with yours.

@Austinelewex What kind of water do you usually use to drink? From the wells in your city, or bottled, or from tankers from Ngwo?

Wow! @OlgaKlimchik I’ll like to compare the wells.

Your feedback response is correct. By the way, it is very bad to interfere with nature,(In the case if draining the swamps) it always leads to grievous consequences.

Thanks for the response.

@OlgaKlimchik I drink bottled water here in Enugu. People that live in Ngwo drink pipe-borne water but here you can never trust the Tanker.

It is advisable to use the Tanker water in cooking because it passes through heating.

@OlgaKlimchik Most of the industries in Enugu are located at Ngwo - Breweries, Water treatment plants that produces table water. etc because of presence of pipe borne water there.

@Austinelewex I can’t make a photo of industrial well and unfortunately I haven’t any photo of domestic well in Belarus.

But I have a photo of the old well near the house in Ukraine (poor quality photo, but it’s the single one).

The water can be raised from the well with the help of electric motor or manually using a bucket tied to a rope.

By the way some years ago the road was built near the village and blocked the way of natural sources. This led to significant lowering of water level. Many wells in the village became useless because of it. We only had to extend a hosepipe and continued using the well.

One more problem is the quality of water. Underground water isn’t safe anymore, you can’t drink it without boiling and you can’t drink it at all in some places because of huge pollution with fertilizers and different chemicals (including domestic chemicals).

Very nice and well informative post @Austinelewex In our country especially in our rural areas tubewells are used to get drinking water. Earlier people drank water from the river and wells. But those days are gone. In our big cities drinking water is supplied by purifying river water. In other towns, deep tubewells are used to get water from underground. Bottled water is also every where in our country.

Wow @OlgaKlimchik Thank you for trying so hard to show me a picture of a well in Ukraine.

Yes, you are very right, because of heavy industrialization underground water table has been reduced drastically.

Here in Enugu and Nigeria at large there are some states the water level is considerably low not even far than 4 metres. But in the Northern part of Nigeria is is very very high. Thanks. :+1:t4: :slightly_smiling_face:

@Austinelewex Interesting topic. :slightly_smiling_face: Currently in my area (at least to me):

  1. Drinking water - Bottle water
  2. Other purposes - Tap water sourced from Chao Phraya river - Major River in Thailand, hahaha a bit tie in.

When I was a kid, we drank rain water. It was centuries ago. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you for sharing this nice post with us.

@Ant_Bad_Yogi Yes I did drank rain water probably when I was small. In Enugu I settle for bottle water but back in Umuahia where we have bore hole, I drink bore hole water, it is very clean and safe.

Pertaining to Chai Phraya river is it treated before distribution?

Because of large abundance of water in Southern Region of Nigeria, it is only in the villages that make use of rain, streams, spring water for domestic use. Mainly in the cities, people go for deep bore hole where it could be sourced.

Thanks for the link. I’ve read the post again. :slightly_smiling_face:
