The Black & Purple Soft-Serve

What captured my eyes? It seems pretty obvious. The black colored soft-serve and cone! It’s hard not to notice it right? I found** iHalo Krunch** on Instagram because its color is just so eye-catching and told myself I must try it when I visit Toronto. I did, and to my surprise, it tasted better than I thought.

We know that sometimes Instagramic food looks good but doesn’t taste as good, but this one, this ice-cream didn’t fail me into the trap, instead, it’s a really good one. The black color for both soft-serve and cone is made of charcoal, and the purple soft-serve is taro flavored. They also serve milk and matcha (Japanese green tea) flavored soft-serve and many other ice-cream/sorbet flavors.

Looks awesome! I definitely have a place to go during a future visit in Toronto (someday). Thanks for sharing. What was the most impressive taste you have tried there so far?

Hi @FlameFox ,

Thank you!

I’ve only tried charcoal (black), taro (purple), and milk (white) flavors (as shown in the above picture). Among these three, my favorite will be the taro!

Hiya, @ChanneLing ,

Wait! So, black is actual charcoal? OMG! Really? (have never tried that taste which is why the surprise. Sorry if it sounds rude. It’s just a surprise)

Hi @FlameFox ,

Haha, no worries ;).

Yes, it’s charcoal flavored. Actually, there was a trend in Asia (especially Japan) using charcoal to dye food color to black a few years ago. People are still doing it these days (just not as much as before).

The black and purple colors are indeed eye-catching. I noticed that almost everyone passing by the ice-cream shop was amazed by the colors lol.

Many thanks for clarifying, @ChanneLing !

You can see that it’s not very popular in some countries, like Bulgaria indeed  Sounds exciting to try this new thing. I am slightly surprised to read that there was such trend in Japan … everything falls on it’s place, knowing the culture is slightly eccentric. It’s cool to see that it’s a known practice in Canada, tho

Hi @FlameFox ,

Yes, that’s very true.

Butterfly Pea is another popular dying ingredient which can add blue or purple colors to beverages. It was pretty popular in Asia too.

Heard of this one and tried before at a place in Sofia, called Confetti. Even did an article about it. An honorable mention of a taste, @ChanneLing ! What I was thinking is, whether the charcoal have side effects like detox or anything else at this place. (would be kind of expected :P) Do you know of such?

Hi @FlameFox , cool! Did you post it on Connect?

I’ve seen some articles saying that but it’s not scientifically proven yet. On the contrary, some articles say that charcoal shouldn’t be added to food since it can’t even be considered as a food additive. Some people even say that it’s gimmicky and only marketing hype.

As for me, I don’t really mind these controversies. As long as it looks good, tastes good, and not harmful to health, I’m totally fine with it lol.

Oh yes, how can I miss a great ice cream spot and never mention on Connect? The article is here, if you’re interested. Creams in UK is another favorite place but non-traditional tastes are not on their list, unfortunately. Sour ice cream is their top eccentric. (Wrote an article which you can see here, if you are curious. That’s just an honorable mention. Not a must, for sure!)
Burning dishes is specialty for some people … which is the main reason I was wondering if other countries consider charcoal a delicacy or healthy dietary vision. Don’t know. The family joke is ‘It’s burned? No probs, we’ll do a detox diet then’.

On the taste matter, our views match in full - as long as it’s tasty, it will have space on my plate.
The black waffle cone also grabbed my attention. Are all of them black, actually?

Hi @FlameFox , thanks for sharing!!

Hope I could have the chance to try them one day.

Yes, the waffle cone is all black.

I will keep an eye on your travels and hope I will see you at Confetti someday too, @ChanneLing @

Also, wow, so, no other cone colors? Black only? This is me, looking for the most affordable flights!

Hahaha, thanks @FlameFox !

As far as I remember, yes, they only have black cones (if I don’t remember wrong lol).

Hope it doesn’t taste like charcoal … Does it? It’s curious how colorful these flavours look and whether there’s difference between taste and appearance.

@FlameFox Haha, thankfully no. I think they only use it to color dye.

The cone still tastes like a normal waffle cone (or maybe I just too focused on the ice cream lol)

Uh, great to hear it’s normal taste there too! It’s kinda too much of modified foods around.

With the risk to turn into a spammer, I also wonder if rest of the ice creams have creamy flavor too. Is that the case, @ChanneLing ? They do look like those ice creams from all adds we have seen online however it sometimes feels like there’s ice pieces in the cream - personal experience speaking right now.

P.S. If I had a lolling emoji, I would have used it instead of a cudo for your previous reply. You made me laugh.
