A typical Japanese breakfast, known as asagohan (朝ご飯), is a thoughtfully balanced meal designed to provide sustained energy and nutrition without feeling heavy. It is famously built on the foundation of ichiju-sansai (one soup, three sides), which emphasizes a variety of textures, seasonal ingredients, and the five primary flavors.
That is a classic, well-balanced Japanese 定食 - Teishoku (set meal) breakfast, which is common in both homes and popular casual chains like Sukiya. It focuses on the traditional “one soup, three sides” balance. Me and my LG Husband @Rahbar visited Sukiya for having our breakfast.
Main Components of the Meals
Rice with Bonito Flakes (鰹節- Katsuobushi): A large bowl of white steamed rice topped with bonito flakes (dried, fermented, and smoked skipjack tuna). These flakes add a savory umami kick.
★Japanese Rice with Bonito flakes
Grilled Salmon (鮭 塩焼き- Sake Shioyaki): A staple protein for breakfast. It appears to be salt-grilled, providing a simple, savory flavor that pairs perfectly with the rice.
★Grilled Salmon
Miso Soup (味噌汁-Misoshiru) A red bowl containing miso broth with what contains abura-age (deep-fried tofu pouches) and green onions.
Side Dishes & Condiments
Okra and Soft Boiled Egg(温泉卵- Onsen Tamago) : A small bowl featuring sliced okra and a soft-poached “hot spring” egg. This is often mixed together with a splash of soy sauce to create a silky, healthy topping for the rice.
★okra, soft Boiled egg and miso Soup
Gyugara (Beef Strips): A small side dish of thinly sliced beef simmered with onions, likely in a sweet-savory soy dashi (the same topping used for Gyudon).
★Beef Stripes
Iced Tea (お茶-ocha) A refreshing glass of what is likely Oolong or Mugicha (barley tea).
Unlike many breakfasts patterns that lean toward sugars (cereal, pastries, bread) or heavy fats, the Japanese breakfast focuses on protein and fiber . This combination helps prevent blood sugar spikes and keeps us full until lunch.
