The AI Photography Hypocrisy: Why Photoshop Is Accepted but AI Is Condemned

For years, photographers have edited images far beyond the moment the picture is taken. Adjustments include exposure, colour correction, softening of dark shadows, whitening faces, cropping out uninteresting details, erasing flaws, and manipulating lighting in order to make more effective images. This used to be done through chemical processes in the darkroom; now, it is done in a computer.

But in the modern day, when artificial intelligence helps to improve the photo, everyone instantly calls the image “artificial” or “manipulated.”

What’s the difference between using AI and what photographers have always done?

It is safe to say that photography has never been able to reflect reality accurately. This means that even before editing starts, the photo itself is already an interpretation. It is the choice of the lens that sets the perspective of the photograph, while the aperture and exposure affect the focus and mood of the picture.

The arrival of programs like Photoshop gave photographers more possibilities with their photographs than ever. Brighten areas of dark colours, bring out detail, add contrast, enhance colours, erase distracting elements and make images look much better than how they were at first. Such practices became standard for professional photography.

In such context, AI-assisted enhancement is simply an extension of existing methods of working with pictures and not a replacement of them.

When AI-assisted enhancement is being used to enhance lighting, recover hidden details, sharpen images, reduce noise, fix colour balance or other flaws in technical sense, many times it is doing what photographers or photo editors did before using computer programs. And the goal of those actions was always to make the picture reflect the vision of the photographer.

Critics often argue that AI-enhanced images are not authentic. But authenticity should not be judged by the tool used. It should be judged by the intent behind the edit.

There is an important distinction between enhancement and fabrication.

Enhancement improves an existing photograph. It may correct exposure, improve clarity, balance colours, or remove technical flaws while preserving the original scene and subject.

Fabrication creates elements that were never present or substantially alters reality.

These are not the same thing.

If a photographer spends thirty minutes adjusting shadows and highlights in editing software, few people object. If an AI system performs the same adjustments in thirty seconds, the result is suddenly called artificial. The difference is often not in the image itself but in the perception of the tool used to create it.

Since the beginning of photography, there have been many technologies introduced that photographer have resisted using. For example, colour photography was initially met with criticism from photographers that claimed that black and white pictures were the purest form. Digital cameras were rejected by film fans. There was a claim about Photoshop ruining the whole photography. Now it is time for AI.

The question here is not whether AI helped. The question is whether the picture captures the scene and the subject, and the idea of the photographer.

AI-enhanced photographs can still contain all the components that made the picture great. The technology will not change the essence of the picture. The technology will only help see the details, raise the quality, and solve the technical issues that would otherwise take hours to deal with.

Photography has always been developing together with technologies. AI is just another step in that long process.

For those who claim all AI-augmented photographs are fake, there is something worth considering: photographers have always had a hand in adjusting light, tones, contrast, and perceptions ever since the advent of photography. The methods have changed. The concept has not.

Whenever a major technological shift occurs, it is natural for contradictions and fears to arise alongside it. This does not mean that AI is bad.

When cameras went digital and Photoshop emerged, people similarly claimed that the true craft of photography was being lost. The same is happening today with AI. As for concerns regarding security and misuse, these hesitations and contradictions surrounding AI will naturally fade away as our cybersecurity strengthens and regulations are established. In reality, AI is simply the next evolution of Photoshop and image editing.

The question you raised was already on my mind, and I had been thinking about it too. In my view, if AI-generated or heavily AI-enhanced images start replacing authentic photos on Google Maps, they could mislead users, business owners, and even misrepresent landmarks. It would also reduce trust in Google Maps, because users may find it difficult to tell the difference between real and AI-generated images.

in my opinion, neither AI nor Photoshop nor any other editing tool are neither “condemned” nor “accepted”. The question is rather to what extend a pictures is modified, for what purpose the image will be used and what is the objective for any editing?

Talking about photo contributions to Google Maps, I was curious myself to understand where Google sets the limits. Instead of digging into Google’s (not so easy to read) documentation, I did ask Gemini and got the following response:

When uploading photo or video contributions to Google Maps, Google uses automated image and text recognition systems (OCR and AI) to ensure that media content is representative, authentic, and helpful.

According to Google’s official User Generated Content Guidelines, the following limits, allowed edits, and absolute taboos apply to media editing:

1. What is allowed and encouraged (Permitted Edits)

Minor stylistic adjustments to improve photo or video quality are explicitly allowed, provided the final result accurately represents the real-world location:

Straightening & Horizon Alignment: Straightening crooked shots (e.g., aligning building edges or the horizon).

Exposure & Contrast Adjustments: Brightening dark shadows or slightly adjusting contrast to make details more visible.

Color Correction & White Balance: Restoring natural colors (e.g., correcting a strong yellow cast caused by indoor lighting).

Privacy-related Blurring: Intentionally blurring faces or license plates is permitted and is even required for Street View / 360° uploads.

Subtle Filters: Mild filters are permitted as long as they do not distort the true color representation of the location.

2. What must be strictly avoided (No-Gos & Rejection Triggers)

Google strictly limits artificially altered or distracting media. The following often lead to automated rejection or subsequent removal:

Added Text, Logos & Watermarks (Text Overlays):
Rule: Adding text boxes, banners, promotional links, or phone numbers over the image is prohibited under the guidelines.

  • Why is it still often accepted? If the AI fails to detect the text as an intrusive overlay or if manual/automated review is delayed, such photos may slip through. However, once detected by filters or reported by users, they will be removed.

Borders, Frames & Collages:
Combining multiple photos into a collage or adding decorative borders/frames is prohibited because collages are difficult to read on mobile devices.

Extreme Distortion & Heavy Filters:
Images with extreme oversaturation, heavy HDR effects, or distortion that make the scene look unnatural.

Screenshots, Stock Photos & AI-Generated Content:
Screenshots (e.g., of websites or menus on a mobile screen) as well as third-party stock photos are not allowed.

Altering Reality (Adding/Removing Objects):
Retouching out distracting elements (e.g., removing trash cans or people using Generative AI or Photoshop) is not permitted, as it alters the factual representation of the place.

3. Special Case: Detectable Text in the Image (e.g., Traffic Signs, Street Signs)

The fact that photos containing real-world signs (traffic signs, street names, information boards) are sometimes rejected by the system is due to how automated algorithms operate:

  1. OCR False Positives: The image recognition software extracts text from objects (such as traffic signs or house numbers). If this text contains number sequences or terms that the algorithm mistakenly flags as sensitive private data (e.g., phone numbers) or spam, the filter triggers.

  2. Text-Overlay Misclassification: If the algorithm mistakenly interprets the real-world text on a sign as a digitally added overlay/graphic, it applies the rule against text overlays.

I think the guide shared by @WilfriedB is extremely clear about editing a photo, and I would like to remind that in the App there’s an editing tool embedded from Google photos.


It provides 3 automatic types of editing: enhanced, dynamic, improve with the AI

So I don’t see a discrimination on photos edited with the use of the AI.
Of course, our editing must be related to the permitted improvements.
Unfortunately in Google Maps I see photos heavily altered, or fully AI generated, and this is definitely not permitted.
It’s not a matter of discrimination, but simply related to the fact that the images must be original, taken by us.
