The aftermath of Hurricane in Greece

Hello,

Last week, on 10th of July, the strong hurricane has struck the Greece regioun Halkidiki.

I happened to be there on my vacation and I’m going to share with you this unforgettable experience.

It was very scary ఠ_ఠ

At about 10 p.m. the electricity in the village Chaniotis where I stayed were cut off so my syster and I went to investigate. We spotted the huge black cloud across the sky and right above the sea. In its center yellow-orange flashes of lights were visibles - probably lightnings - but since there were no thunder we decided that the cloud was way too far from the shore. How short sighted of us.

Literally 5 minutes passed and we turned to go back to the cottage when a strong wind began to blow. I read afterwards that it was about 100 km/h. My sister and I started to run, behind us something fell of a considerable height with metallic sound, the sand was flying in our faces even if we weren’t on the beach. The wind was really strong - it was hard to run, the breath was catching. Thanks to a short distance we made it to the cottage safe and sound.

We had to hastily take everything off the balcony because now the rain started - again there was no thunder! The lightnings were flashing one after another, many many of them - but absolutely no sounds of thunder.

By the morning we had no water in the village since the local electric power station was destroed and the water couldn’t be delivered to the nearby places. In total we spent around 41 hour without any electicity and 35 hours without water. People were collecting sea water in bottles and buckets in order to flash the toilet.

After the strong wind and hurricane in Chaniotis many old trees were broken, on the central alley the telephone post and lampposts were torn from the ground and scattered around. You can see the pictures that we took on a next day.

In all the Halkidiki area totally 7 people were found dead aftermath.

Hi @WhiteSnow ,

This is really unfortunate and looks very scary :frowning: I hope the situatian will get back to normal quickly.

I hope you won’t mind if I move your post to Local Stories section where everyone can share local news. I would also recommend you to read how you can Help you community during a crisis by using the Google features.
