The summer heat lingers on in Fukuoka, Japan.
I’ve learned that Tenjin, Fukuoka’s commercial district, is a place brimming with art, so I wanted to share that.
1.Tenjin Underground Shopping Arcade
The entrance gates are all cast iron.
Small arabesque patterns adorn the cast ironwork.
Artistry extends to the finest details, even in places no one may see.
And the ceiling when descending underground
When you go underground, do you ever look up at the ceiling?
We also create ceilings, each individually patterned with cast iron.
2.Tenjin Building
Completed in 1960. Built in just 18 months, it was the most advanced business building of its time.
The reddish-brown tiles are Arita ware.
A design that incorporates a traditional craft with over 400 years of history into the exterior of a business building.
The white building nearby is the exhaust tower for the Tenjin arcade mentioned earlier.
These tiles are also Arita ware.
About Arita ware(JTA Sightseeing Database)
These were created by the people at a company called NIC, which was based in Fukuoka at the time.
They studied and imported avant-garde European furniture designs, among other things, enabling them to design various items themselves and create spaces.
NIC has since gone out of business.
Tenjin too has seen its old buildings demolished and replaced with new ones.
Before they are rebuilt, I will document all sorts of things.

日本の福岡はまだまだ夏の暑さが残っています。
福岡の商業地の天神はアートにあふれる場所であることを学びましたので共有します。
1.天神地下街
1976年オープン。
ショッピングモールを兼ね備えた地下道。
入口の柵はすべて鋳物で作られています。
鋳物には小さいですが唐草模様を施してあります。
誰が見るかわからないところまで細かい部分にアート。
そして地下に降りたときの天井
地下に降りたとき、天井を見ることはありますか？
天井にも鋳物で1つ1つ模様を施したものを制作しています。
2.天神ビル
1960年完成。当時の最先端のビジネスビルで18ヶ月で建てられました。
赤褐色のタイルは有田焼。
400年以上続く伝統工芸をビジネスビルの外装にするデザイン。
そばにある白い建物は先程紹介した天神地下街の排気塔です。
このタイルも有田焼。
これらを作り出したのは当時福岡にあったNICという会社の人達。
彼らは当時ヨーロッパの前衛的な家具などのデザインを学んで仕入れることなどによって、自分たちで様々なものをデザインしたり、空間を作り上げたりしていました。
NICはすでに廃業しています。
また天神も古い建物が壊され、新しいビルに建て替えられています。
建て替えられるまでにいろいろなものを記録していきます。
