The Rock Church, Finnish called Temppeliaukio Kirkko, is very unique and a special arch shaped Church built by digging holes in the rock surface.
The site, designed by the Suomalaimen brothers, used to be a large block of rock, which was excavated from the site to preserve its integrity. There is no tower at the top, which is normally found in churches.
As you enter the entrance to the church in the tunnel, you can see the light from the inside of the wall, which is deliberately preserved in its original rock appearance, and you can see the corner of the special dome.
Admission fee costs three euros and the amount reminds me of three euros for the super-plain Stockholm Cathedral as well.
Upon entering, one can feel the introduction of light from the top. The metal ring glass ceiling built on the rock is 24 meters in diameter and about 10 meters high, supported by 100 radiating beams and columns. The dome combines the characteristics of the rock wall and introduces natural light through the light of the glass, giving the church a warm and moist atmosphere instead of being cold and empty because it is inside the rock.
I didn’t know there was a second floor until I looked back from the first floor, but I didn’t see a staircase in the church. When I asked a handsome uncle, I knew that the staircase was next to the entrance.
Looking down from the second floor, I know that the arrangement of the seat is round and the characteristics of the rock make the sound penetration and echo effect very good.
The Church of the Rock is a very special architectural design that once visited, people want to visit again, so that the sightseers who experience it personally can smile at the ingenuity of the designers.
