TeamIndia Maps Stories - Bastion Bungalow – Discovering a Colonial Heritage Gem in Fort Kochi - TravellerG

Dear friends,

Exploring historic places is always exciting for Local Guides, especially when those places tell stories from centuries ago. During our recent exploration of the heritage streets of Fort Kochi, we came across a remarkable colonial structure — Bastion Bungalow (which is also known as ‘District Heritage Museum’ and showcases historical artefacts, paintings, and cannons).

This beautiful historic bungalow stands as a reminder of Kochi’s rich colonial past. Visiting such locations and sharing them on Google Maps helps preserve their stories while enabling travellers and explorers to discover them more easily.

A Brief History of Bastion Bungalow

The Bastion Bungalow dates back to 1667, when the Dutch built it during their rule in Kochi. The name “Bastion” comes from the nearby Stromberg Bastion, which was one of the defensive structures of the old Dutch fortifications in the area.

During the colonial era, the bungalow served as an important administrative residence. When the British later took control of the region, the building continued to be used for official purposes.

Today, the Bastion bungalow is a museum only; previously, it was the Kochi Sub-Collector’s Office.

Architectural Features

One of the most fascinating aspects of Bastion Bungalow is its architecture, which beautifully blends European colonial style with local Kerala construction techniques.

Some notable architectural features include:

  • Thick laterite stone walls help maintain a cool interior.
  • Large wooden doors and windows are typical of colonial buildings.
  • High ceilings are designed to improve ventilation in tropical climates.
  • Sloping tiled roofs are adapted to Kerala’s heavy monsoon rains.
  • A spacious veranda surrounds parts of the structure.
  • A peaceful compound filled with greenery.

These features not only highlight the craftsmanship of the period but also show how colonial architecture adapted to the local environment.

A Local Guide’s Perspective

As Local Guides, we often focus on popular attractions, restaurants, and tourist spots. However, heritage buildings like Bastion Bungalow remind us that every historic structure has a story waiting to be mapped and shared.

This exploration was a part of LG’s Kochi Mega Meet-up (Jan 25th), and I was accompanied by @Rahul001, @SarathUpendran, @Gurukrishnapriya, @SonamW, @Manishhh and @SudhanshuTuti; we captured photos of the museum, its exterior and surroundings and contributed them to Google Maps so that visitors can better understand its architectural beauty and historical importance.

The building is fully accessible, and they have taken care of sustainability well.

Photography Highlights

For photography lovers, Bastion Bungalow offers some wonderful opportunities:

  • The colonial-style front facade,
  • Details of the wooden windows and tiled roof
  • The serene compound around the building - the adjacent compound has some beautiful statues
  • Architectural textures that reflect its centuries-old history

Historic buildings like this make for fascinating subjects because every corner reflects a piece of the past.

Nearby Attractions to Explore

While visiting Bastion Bungalow, Local Guides and travellers can also explore several iconic landmarks nearby in Fort Kochi:

  • Vasco D’Gama Square
  • St. Francis Church
  • Santa Cruz Basilica
  • Chinese Fishing Nets

These locations together create a wonderful heritage walk through Fort Kochi, offering glimpses into the Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences that shaped the region.

Conclusion

Challenges within the Local Guides community often encourage us to look beyond and discover places that deserve more attention. Exploring Bastion Bungalow was one such rewarding experience. By documenting heritage structures like this on Google Maps, we help keep their stories alive for future travellers and history enthusiasts.

I would like to thank our fellow LG @DurgaK03, who initiated this challenge (Walls that Whisper History) and inspired me to explore this fascinating heritage building.

If you are visiting Fort Kochi, do take a moment to appreciate this historic bungalow and the centuries of history it represents.

The photos of the cannon and the wooden staircase really bring the colonial vibe to life. It’s amazing how this structure has stood the test of time since the 17th century.
