(#Team india)Powerful wild fruit vegetable kartola

Few days ago, I walked into my farm & I saw this amazing fruit – Then, I remembered about the medicinal value of this Vegetable / fruit, which my mother used to explain me.
This Vegetable / Fruit is none other than “Kantola”!!! With many names, like Spiny Gourd, bristly Balsma Pear, Teasle Gourd etc. has it’s botanical name as Momordica dioica.

The Scary looking Kantola is friendly, which turns from light green to dark green to yellow. This a vegetable which is more abundant during monsoon season. And, this is seen in most of the regions of India and some parts of South Asia. This also grows in ‘not so fertile’ soil. This fruit is usually cooked or fried with spices and few people consume with meat or fish, too.
Kantola has lots of health benefits; for the same reason, this is consumed locally & exported to different countries.

The main known benefits are:
 Kantola is gifted with full of dietary fibre, minerals, vitamins and anti-oxidants, but, Low in calory.
 Kantola has good source of Vitamin B, which is vital for the cell growth and reproduction; hence this food is important during pre-pregnancy & Pregnancy period.
 Being rich in plant insulin, this helps to reduce the level of blood sugar.
 Heard that regular use of Kantola, which is a rich source of vitamin C, reduces the chance of occurrence of cancer.
 Read that ‘various flavonoids such as beta carotene, lutein and zeaxanthins that act as protective scavengers’, helps to keep the skin healthy & smooth.
 Act as a natural scrub, this helps in reducing the formation of excess bad odour & sweating.
 Vitamin A rich Kantola, protects your good eyesight.
 With abundant natural fibres, Kantola helps to stimulate the digestion, which in turn reduces many symptoms of indigestion and constipation.
According to my mother, this Wonder Vegetable, Fruit is miracle gift from God almighty – as a home remedy (medicine), Kantola at vegetable level & Fruit level, comes handy for curing many symptoms….
Have you tried it?
Did I bore you?

It belongs to the bitter gourd family but is not as bitter in taste even with the skin on.
Cooking method:-
Slice each kartuli lenghtwise; 4-8 pieces depending on size. Heat oil, add mustard seeds; when they sputter add onions, curry leaves, green chillies and stir fry. Add kartuli, salt, turmeric, chilli powder ( ½ tablespoon per 150 gm). A few minutes later add some water cover and cook till tender. Add corriander and freshly grated coconut. It tastes like Karela without the bitterness.
