Tagge Khan is the corrupt word for Ataga Khan a favorite general of Emperor Akbar whose tomb is hidden in the narrow bylanes of the Nizamuddin area of Delhi.
He was murdered by Adham Khan who was the son of Maham Anga, Akbar’s wet nurse in 1561. Akbar immediately ordered the execution of Adham Khan by throwing him twice down the ramparts of the Agra Fort.
The tomb of Atgah Khan was built in 1562 and lies on way to the Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah in Delhi.
When I visited here last month the narrow lanes that criss-cross the Nizamuddin area easily led me to the wrong place so I asked residents for directions who could never comprehend the word Atgah Khan since the name is now corrupted to Tagge Khan.
The various pictures that I clicked there show immensely beautiful red sandstone inlay work in marble.
The stonework starts all the way from the dome down to the floor giving a 360° immersive experience into a world of mesmerizing patterns.
How to Reach
I would have loved to reach there on my bike but it was more than 20 years old last week and vehicles older than 15 years are not allowed on Delhi roads anymore.
So I took a metro from IFFCO Chowk in Gurugram on the Yellow Line and deboarded at Jorbagh station in Delhi and took a pedal-driven rickshaw for INR 50 to reach the tomb.
Accessibility Features
Sadly the place is not accessible for a wheelchair since the only entrance is narrow and also the main tomb structure is locked and on a slightly raised platform.
The only creatures besides me who could easily enter the tomb premises are these kitten and a baby Mongoose who is hurrying behind its mother and 3 other siblings whom I was not able to capture since they moved swiftly.
