Switzerland’s Drinking Water Fountains: A Mission for the Environment and the People

In Switzerland, we are blessed with many public fountains that provide fresh, clean drinking water. However, most of these are missing from Google Maps.

I am trying to add these locations to help the community for two big reasons:

  1. For the Environment: When people can find a fountain, they reuse their own bottles. This means less plastic waste and fewer plastic bottles bought from shops.

  2. For the People: In this difficult economy, free public water helps everyone save money. It makes our cities more friendly for locals and tourists.

The Hurdle: I have provided photos with street names, 360 videos, and Satellite proof, but Google Maps is not listing my places. They remain ‘Not Accepted.’

I want to make these ‘Happiness Points’ a permanent part of the map. We need to help people find water easily to reduce stress and protect our planet. Please help me get these vital public spots approved

What Maps category are you suggesting?

Hello @anon76986047,
I did see some of those in Maps. Here is one example: Google Maps . For German language the category “Trinkwasserquelle” was accepted. French would be “Fontaine à eau potable” and Italian “Fontana di acqua potabile”. Did you try any of those categories?

Hello @MortenCopenhagen,

Thank you for asking! I am suggesting categories for natural drinking water sources and clean water spots. I want to help people find these easily to protect our environment and support the community

Hello @WilfriedB,

Thank you so much for these helpful examples in German, French, and Italian! These categories are perfect for the fountains in Switzerland. I will try using these names to make sure the locations are correct on the map

Thanks for the feedback @anon76986047. Remember to chose the category depending on the language set for your maps user interface. E.g. if your user interface setting says Urdu, neither of the three categories might work (I believe). The name should identify the place, neither “Dropped Pin” as in your first screenshot, nor “Drink water fountain” in the other screenshots, which would be redundant with category. Better might be “Bachtelbrunnen” (just as an example) or any name you did find there.

There is a specific category (the one mentioned by @WilfriedB. The two you mentioned might be incorrect.

There can be categories that are not translated into all languages. The US English is the primary list of categories. On

You can download the latest lists if categories and check if the correct category is translated (correctly) into your language.

Further, please know that you should not repeat the category in the name field.

Hello @WilfriedB, thank you for the feedback. In Switzerland, many drinking water fountains do not have a specific name, but they are very important for the community to find. I will use the correct categories as you suggested to make sure they are not redundant on the map. I appreciate your help

As in my example [Street-Name]-Brunnen mit be worth a try in the German speaking part.

Thank you @WilfriedB! That is a very smart idea. I will try using the [Street-Name]-Brunnen format for the nameless fountains I find in Switzerland. This will make it much easier for people to identify exactly where they are. Thanks for the great tip
