Swarna Bhandar Caves in Rajgir are among the most popular tourist attractions, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. Surrounded by scenic beauty, these caves date back to the 3rd–4th century and were built by the great Jain Muni Shri Vairadev Ji as places of worship for Jain monks.
According to legend, King Bimbisara’s treasure was hidden here, giving the site its name Swarna Bhandar (Treasure House). The eastern cave is two-storeyed, and once enshrined idols of Jain deities. Remarkably, idols of Vishnu riding Garuda from the Gupta period were discovered here and are now preserved in the Nalanda Museum.
One cave wall still carries inscriptions, adding historical depth to this sacred site. The peaceful surroundings make it ideal for history lovers and spiritual seekers alike.
Visit in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. Carry water as the site involves walking uphill. Photography of the caves and surrounding landscape is rewarding. Don’t miss combining this visit with the nearby Cyclopean Wall and Venuvana for a full Rajgir experience.
