Sursoptok Underpass- An Accessible underpass in Dhaka

Hello Local Guides!

Today I am writing about one of the most beautiful underpass construction and largest pedestrian Underpass in Bangladesh. Its called Sursoptok Underpass(সুরসপ্তক আন্ডারপাস). The most important feature is that it is a 100% Wheelchair friendly underpass I have ever seen in Bangladesh. If there is nothing wrong with me, it’s the first Wheelchair Accessible and elevator facilitated underpass in Bangladesh. A complete fulfillment of accessibility is here.

This underpass design is inspired by the famous Louvre Museum in France and its established Using Push box Technology. After all this is about a new and safe under passing system with all the modern facilities. This underpass structure was founded by the Government of Bangladesh after the Safe Road Movement in 2018 where a road accident took the lives of two students. The structure is named in honor of the seven heroes (Bir Sreshtho) of our Liberation War. It opened from 12 January 2022 for everyone.

Location: This underpass is situated along the Dhaka - Mymensingh highway (also known as the Airport Road) at MES Square near the Radisson Blu Water Garden and the Kurmitola Hospital in Dhaka.
Upper road side environment!
This underpass system connected this busy road area in one line for pedestrians. This underpass has four 42 meter long tunnels and 15 meters in height. At least 10 people can comfortably walk side by side through the underpass. There are four entrances and two exits on each side of this underpass.

Facilities and features: It has a multi facility option for all with a 24 house security system. Wheelchair accessible ramp, Escalator, Elevator and wide stairs installed nicely there. All the facilities are open for all. The whole underpass is a museum as you can notice every wall has different types and cultural photographs.

Some inside views
For its unique design the inner part of the underpass will be illuminated by sunlight during the day and moonlight at night. For your refreshment it has enough air-conditioning inside the tunnels. The whole sight is monitored by CCTV cameras and it also has fire extinguishers and first-aid facilities on every corner and entrance. After all, Bangladesh Army’s 24 Engineer Construction Brigade team completed this whole project and they are still maintaining the underpass system.

Accessibility: Every sight of the underpass has a long and easy wheelchair accessible ramp with a high capacity Elevator. Elevator also has a sound navigation system. This area is also women and tourist friendly.

This area is completely a different environment for visitors and pedestrians where already established a tourist zone here. Finally this underpass is one of the best symbol of structural development in our country and how the government take caring about public service and accessibility.

Hello @ShafiulB

A nice accessibility post. The photos are very clear and descriptive. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Yesterday I attended an accessibility meet-up it’s nice to think of those who have special needs and different abilities. They will be less dependent on us and others around them they can live freely and happily.

Accessibility features are scarce here in West Africa unfortunately. Good to see how advanced Dhaka is.

Do you live in Dhaka? How often do you pass by this place? I like the place.

Cheers

@SholaIB Hi! Thanks for your joining here in this thread & also thanks for your complements.

Yes, I live in Dhaka but not using this underpass before this visit. Although I used the highway sometimes.

As an Accessibility champion and enthusiastic, I always try to find accessible place to show and encourage others who are searching. Now a days Bangladesh are more careful about accessibility and disabled community. I hope It would be a great example the world.

Keep Inspiring!

The underpass looks very modern @ShafiulB but what surprised me more is the fact that given that Dhaka is a place with a population of tens of millions, it seems that hardly anyone was there when you took your photos. Did you have exclusive or VIP access or something?

Another great post, dear @ShafiulB

“Sursoptok Underpass”

Lovely shots and enjoyable narration.

Accessibility - the ramp photo is very clear.

What is the arrangement for ‘Rain water’ drainage?

The structure looks most modern.

Congratulations…

@ShahMdSultan It’s my pleasure brother that you like this. Waiting to see your blog about sursoptok.

@AdamGT Hi !

Thanks for your commenting here and appreciating.

Yes you are right about the density of population in Dhaka. But I had no any Special access that times. But I had a good timming and I chose a time period for avoiding people in my photography. Although the area is not so crowdy usually. This is a highway and cantonment area of airport road. Not usually a crowded area like others part of the city. And one thing I have to say that, this area is planned nicely for avoiding people crowd and keeping it clean and natural.

Ifthe area is usually not so crowded then why would they put such an underpass there @ShafiulB ?

Wow definitely an impressive and beautiful configuration of engineering and design that will provide a safe option for navigating by foot and hopefully preventing further tragedies. Love the post, @ShafiulB .

@AdamGT Hi!

If I compare with others crowded and heavy traffic area this place nothing. But as a highly density population city its not comparable with others part. But this road angry. This is an important highway (Airport road) where army area, hospital, a 5 star hotel are situated. This area has also a college. The reason was two student were spot dead by a road accident here. After that whole country performed a safe road movement in 2018. During that period government founded a basement for the remembrance of two student accident.

I hope you will understand now.
