Surprise visit to my Older Sister.
We made a crazy, spur of the moment decision on Wednesday night to make a road trip during this holiday. It was all Ronald Ok 's idea. He visited us that night and suggested we drive to Ghana. After considering some factors, I suggested Gusau - my oldest sister Angela Duru lives there with her family. We all agreed to head to Gusau instead. Neither King nor Ronald have ever been to Gusau before now.
Angela had no idea we were coming. I only told her I was sending someone with books for her son Peter Duru and she was to meet with the person at Zenith Bank Gusau to make a collection. I spoke with Benjamin Duru and ascertained that they were staying put in Gusau this weekend. The stage was set for our surprise visit!
Early Friday morning we departed Lagos at 5.45am to make the long road trip. Ene and her friend Kes joined us too. We played a bit on the trip, stopping to buy food items at some towns. Thus, it was dark by the time we arrived Kaduna.
We realised we would be arriving Gusau very late and the plan to get her to meet with someone at Zenith bank and surprise her won’t fly. We didn’t know the way to her house and so I called Naomie Owolabi to help us out. She hooked us up with Nkechi, who helped with directions to the Durus home.
At 11.48pm we drove to the front of their home and I made the call. I told Angela that the person she was to meet at Zenith bank was waiting for her. She sounded surprised and kinda hesitated. Then I told her I was the one making the delivery and I was outside her gate.
Of course she didn’t believe me. I told her the dog was being rude and barking at us. And I went on to describe her gate. She screamed, and kept screaming. ![]()

She didn’t believe me until she came downstairs and saw us.
The Duru’s reaction was priceless! Their warm welcome made the 18hour road trip all worth it.
Ronald is on a mission to eat something he has never eaten before. My goal is to make that happen. Tuwon shinkafa and miyan kuka on my mind.
