All the best on your local guide journey ![]()
It certainly looks like an unusual increase over a short time.
Do you have an explanation for this? Did you recently add a lot more media that can explain this?
There has recently been a week-long disruption in getting our view totals updated. This might explain most or all of the sudden increase.
@TitikMariati just reported this:
And here is a screenshot of my views graph:
I have not done anything that can explain this jump. I have not added any media for a long time. And if you compare the three graphs in this discussion, it is clear that the jump is likely something all Local Guides have experienced.
I believe the jump is an “artifact” = a consequence of the delayed updates rather than a sudden spike in view numbers.
Further, I’m concerned that Google Maps is smoothing these graphs too much and amplifying such spikes to look more dramatic than they really are. This can be done by manipulating the y-axis scale.
I have been adding photos for years now, and a sudden and unexplained jump like this is not realistic in my opinion. Such large numbers do not jump this much.
I think the smoothing is failing to actually show us the week-long interruption of updates. If the artificial smoothing in the days prior to the jump were removed, we could see and recognize that the jump was just a “catch-up” after the interruption of updates.
@WilfriedB and @ErmesT, what do you think?
Update: @TitikMariati and @Amine-BENBACHIR this is not to criticize you and your efforts. I think there is a problem with the graph.
Jadi begini , sedikit saya jelaskan .

Terima kasih ![]()
Grafiknya Bapak @MortenCopenhagen , gak kuat baca angkanya .
Terima kasih ![]()
I totally agree with you @MortenCopenhagen. In the time between Oct 19 and Oct 25, 2026 there was no increase visible (i.e. published by Google Maps). This applies to the individual view counts, as well as the total numbers. The total numbers always increase at least 24 hours later than the sum of the individual counts.
When I say “visible”, I am convinced Google permanently continues counting in the background. Once they re-started publishing again partially on Oct 26, but then massive on Oct 29, the numbers included all the increases of the previous week.
Note however, this is my conclusion based on the numbers, I track daily. Since Google never reveals the technical details, we don’t know it is the truth - just an “educated guess”.
Terima kasih banyak Bapak @WilfriedB , atas ilmunya. Terima kasih

@Amine-BENBACHIR
Thank you Morten for this clear analysis. Indeed, it really looks like a server catch-up after the update delay rather than a sudden change in my daily activity. It is very interesting to see this happening globally across accounts. Greetings from Algeria! ![]()
Thank you Wilfried and Titik for sharing your data and insights. It’s fascinating to see that we all experienced the exact same pattern during that update delay period!"
This is indeed a guess @Amine-BENBACHIR. Even though, I am convinced it applies to all of us, we don’t have any proof.
Thanks for the tag, @MortenCopenhagen
I think the exceptional spike can be easily explained. You are right in saying that we’re all experiencing a similar trend, due to the way Google update our views, that is the same for everyone.
Correct. You can easily check the average of the increase in my contributions
In this specific case we have also an extra addition of views, caused by some recent addition that was causing a lot of additional views: 32.138.
The bad news, @Amine-BENBACHIR , is that in Google Maps originality of the contents are not an option, and all the photos that are receiving this big amount of views are sourced from external sources, in particular Facebook (the photos) and TikTok (the video).
This is not only a violation of Google Maps policies, but also a violation of the laws of your country. Copyright law in Tunisia is primarily governed by Law No. 94-36 of February 24, 1994, on Literary and Artistic Property, as amended and supplemented by Law No. 2009-33 of June 23, 2009, with further parliamentary updates in 2026 to incorporate international treaties. ( https://www.wipo.int/wipolex/en/legislation/details/21148 ). Violations face civil and penal sanctions, including fines and potential imprisonment.
I am certain that you obtained this content in good faith; however, copyright infringement is tantamount to theft and puts not only your Google Maps account at risk, but your personal freedom as well. If one of the creators of the many images you took from the web—some of which even feature a clearly visible watermark—were to file a complaint against you, you could face penalties or even imprisonment, especially if this is a recurring behavior.
So, why not play it safe and delete ALL media that isn’t yours?
Apparently Google is already putting an eye on your contributions, and more than 2500 are already hidden, so I suggest you a quick cleanup
Thanks for sharing the linear interpolations clearly showing the interrupted updates caused the spike. Brilliant.
