Surat Railway Station (ST), a crucial junction on the Ahmedabad Mumbai main line, serves as an A1-category hub for the Western Railway. Built in 1860, its grand colonial-era main building stands tall, symbolizing its historical importance to the ‘Diamond City.’ It boasts high passenger traffic with over 350 trains halting daily, cementing its role as a vital gateway to Gujarat’s industrial and textile heartland.
The station currently operates across four platforms (plus additional tracks), though access may be limited due to ongoing redevelopment. It provides essential amenities like retiring rooms, dedicated waiting rooms, and multiple food and refreshment stalls, including the famous ‘Food Express.’ Cleanliness, once recognized as the best among large Indian stations, remains a high priority.
A major multi modal transport hub (MMTH) redevelopment is currently underway, aiming to integrate the existing rail line with the upcoming Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) and city transport networks (Metro, Bus). This significant project aims for completion around
December 2026 and will transform the station into a world-class transit complex with airport like facilities.
Despite the temporary inconvenience caused by construction, which has occasionally shifted some originating and terminating trains to Udhna Junction, station management has ensured functionality. Passenger assistance, including lifts, escalators, and a temporary concourse for smooth movement, is actively managed to mitigate disruption.
Connectivity is excellent, with a prepaid auto/taxi stand directly outside the main exit and a city bus terminal nearby. Surat Railway Station, though currently in transition, is a highly effective, strategically important, and historically significant junction that promises an ultra modern travel experience upon the completion of its ambitious redevelopment.
