I would like to introduce you to Sakayu Onsen Area, Aomori, Japan. I would call this place “Beautiful Unplanned Destination”. I hope this post can give you an idea of a nature destination in Aomori. Here is my story about it during my vacation to Aomori in September 2017.
It was a nice and lovely day during the trip. I planed to visit Mount Hakkoda which is in Aomori, Japan. I took a JR bus from Shin-Aomori Station, direction to Lake Towada, and got off at Ropeway Station bus stop. The ride took about an hour and I really enjoyed the view along the road. Everything was perfect until I found out that the Ropeway was not in operation that morning. I was shocked as I really wanted to go for a hike on the top of the mountain. I waited at the Ropeway Station for almost 2 hours hoping that the Ropeway would be in operation again plus I didn’t have plan B. While waiting, I re-read information about Mount Hakkoda from a print out I brought and then I found out that there is a place called “Sakayu Onsen” which has some attractions in a walking distant. So I decided to go there instead of waiting at the Ropeway Station. The same route bus took 10 minutes to get there.
I walked from Sakayu Onsen bus stop to a sulfuric pond next to the main street. This area is a volcanically active zone. It was 10 minutes walking on a trail along the street. I was impressed by the beautiful green water and autumn colors around the pond.
After enjoying the pond, I crossed the street and was stunned by a small stream. What a view! I then walked further to a Hot Bedstone Spa. The view of the same stream with rocks and autumn colors is so nice. It was a bit cold that day so I enjoyed the Hot Bedstone Spa a lot and the best part is it’s fee of charge.
Next to the Hot Bedstone Spa is a Botanical Garden of Tohoku University. There are a small trail network which visitors can explore the garden for free. It’s really peaceful and I really enjoyed the walk with the view.
After exploring the garden, I walked back to Sakayu Onsen. You can enjoy the Onsen there. Unfortunately I’m not a person who likes Onsen much so I just had some refreshments then took the bus back to Shin-Aomori Station. I’m so glad I decided to go there, my Beautiful Unplanned Destination.
If you have a chance to visit Aomori, I would recommend Sakayu Onsen Area for a destination of yours. I hope you enjoy my story of Beautiful Unplanned Destination. Thank you so much for reading this post.
