“Bordano - the Village of Butterflies” is what you read on the sign, entering the village of Bordano
750 inhabitants in a small town at the foot of the Alps, 30 Kilometers from the Austrian border.
I discovered the Village of the Butterflies a week ago, on a photo on Instagram posted by a friend. The photo was so beautiful that we decided to visit the place. 150 Kilometers (93 miles) and less than two hours by car. May first was the perfect day, sunny, with a good temperature. The photo was about the House of Butterflies, so what we found when we arrived was absolutely unexpected: 300 paintings on the walls of houses throughout the village.
The village is small, you can cross it on minutes, walking through an art gallery that is all around you, on public buildings and private homes.
All the murals are about butterflies, painted by street painters year by year. The “butterfly” topic was choose because the butterflies are numerous in the valley, from springtime to autumn. Thanks to the paintings, the village took the name of “the village of butterflies”.
The idea of the butterflies murals crossed the ocean, reaching Alajuela (Costarica), where was replicated on the town.
And from Alajuela the butterflies have flown back, real butterflies this time, to populate the Home of Butterflies, that opens on 2003. Now there is a cooperation between the Home of Butterflies and “el Bosque Nuevo Butterfly Farm and Rainforest Conservation Project”
@AntonellaGr will for sure write soon a post about the House of Butterflies.
[edit: here is her post: The Butterfly Effect]

Just a final note: writing this post and searching for the places in Google maps, I just discovered that some place don’t have any photo. Not yet, but is a matter of minutes.
Have a fun
