Still lots of private adresses on maps

Why are there still being added peoples names and adresses on the map? (that are not open to the public).

Its been like this for years.

Here in an exampel - see the pictures (first picture shows 3 with only name and address) :

It is to keep you busy removing them :joy:

Make sure to check the Local telephone directory first if it could be a new business started from someones home.

How would you block such pins from being created and at the same time allow all new businesses to be added?

All the best

There was a time when I could add my own home as a location to check-in. Maybe I missed something, somewhere…was there a change - that personal homes cannot be added to maps? I mean…it’s hard to understand why someone would do that - in this day and age of terrorism, divided loyalties, and general paranoia - you’d think…I know people can also just share their location. I recently got a notice from my Aunt about 3 hours away. I think this started when she and my Uncle were driving to Colorado to see one of her kids. I’m sure - Google offered helpfully - hey, you wanna share with _________.

In any case, I’m just throwing it out there that the individual living in the home may be the person who identified their living abode.

Imho, the answer is easy, @Torodd83 . Because someone had add a missing place to Google Maps and Google had approved it.

But in the other hand, not every users are aware about places you can’t add to the map which is include private listings and premises (for example: homes).

You can try to report that if you want to.

Aguardo as vossas respostas. Muito obrigado!

Hi, Jose,

I used a translator to read your message. When I look at residential areas on Google maps - in the USA - I see numbers on the buildings already. I assume or think Google adds these numbers because of using maps to guide your trips. It sounds like the buildings you are identifying do not have a number already on them?

If they do not have a number - I think it is the right thing to do - put the number on the building. But putting a person who resides in that building is wrong. Also, if this is an apartment building owned by a business, and the business name is on the building - that should be acceptable. Such as, The Wind Wood Apartment Building. Or Wind Wood Real Estate Building.

I would be interested in hearing how numbers are assigned to buildings/homes/locations in the first place. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @WynLin !

Thank you so much for your kind message.

Here, in Lisbon, all buildings have numbers in their door’s, but the majority are not visible in the photos, because we only can see them in mode street view. So, I tooked photos of each door of my street, and added to Maps, giving also the right category…, and Google had accepted that.

My doubt was, if that was something that it matter’s to Google Maps…, but if they accepted, and you don’t feel it is wrong thing to do, so, I’ll make some more!!..

Thank you so much for your precious help!

Another doubt, if you don’t mind, Lin: these Q&A that we make here in Connect, give us some points?..

Bye!.. Have a nice week!

Hi, yes, I’m in awe of how much of the USA is so precisely mapped - the building numbers are tiny but they are there - and I am certain that the numbers were done by Google Maps software and algorithm, I’m sure there were other methods used to fill in gaps or verify - such as working with the US Postal Office - to get building numbers on the right section of each street. The amount of work that went into that must have been COLOSSAL! It’s like trying to think about “infinity” I can’t do it - my mind shuts down at what infinity really means and how Google Maps got it so right. Still - the local guides have helped to “flesh out” the maps. The building numbers are already embedded so - if you are looking for an address - say 100 S Main Street, SomeCity, SS - you will get good directions to that address. But unless a local google guide has added new businesses - Ask for directions to Midas Tire Service - if the business is not assigned to the address 100 S Main Street - you will never find it. I use Google Maps just like I would a directory - to find out where the nearest pharmacy or gas station is located. Only once have I ever been sent to the wrong place/dead end. I was working for a company that builds warehouses for other buildings - think of Amazon or WalMart. So we build the warehouse, set up the inventory storage, add in robots, etc, we provide the inventory software to control the robots and conveyors. Oftentimes - I can’t put in the name of the warehouse - because it hasn’t opened yet. (I go there to test the software and robotics). One time, I think it was somewhere in the state of Ohio or maybe Indiana? Indiana is not known for its forward-thinking technology use, for sure. All of us, arriving at different times - used the same Google maps - and all of us were sent to a driveway leading into a farmer’s field - with a gate on it stating “private property” Keep Out! We could, at that point, see the new warehouse off in the distance - but from this dead-end driveway - none of us could see how to get there. For me, I just kept driving in the general directions taking turns where I had to - I got there. And of course, I updated maps!

But I think many of us forget how different each country, state, continent, even can be so different - depending on the economic affairs or the governments’ decisions about technology and the Internet. I am amazed you have to add the numbers - and now I appreciate what I have here in the USA even more!!! And am more in awe of Google Maps and what they accomplished on their own.

As for your question about points - the points earned here, as far as I know, do not add to your local guide points. In both cases, the points don’t really mean a lot - I appreciate the points because it tells me Google is paying attention and acknowledging me. Here in this group - I don’t mind helping others earn points - but I really don’t see the point. Ha ha…get it? Point? Point?

Hi Guys

On Google Maps there are two concepts :

Addresses as indicated with the small number seen on Google Maps.

The other concept are the pins showing places of interest.

They are completely different still associated.

That’s not how I understood the problem. Jose is saying there are no numbers (those small numbers) you and I see and he is adding them. Although it sounds like he might need to use Edit instead of adding pictures - his concern was about privacy not how to get the number on the building. :slightly_smiling_face: It’s entirely possible though he may be viewing the maps in a way that does not let him see numbers. But given that India doesn’t seem to have locations marked with handicap symbols, and most of the USA does…I just assumed it was a difference between what I can see and need to fix - and what he can see and needs to fix. I’ve never added a road yet - I’ve been all over the USA. Yet, that is another topic of discussion from other countries than the USA (as far as I know). And the street view is apparently another area where the Maps in the USA are pretty much good to go - whereas some countries - not so much. Since I knew that - I was a bit confused at first but it sounded to me that he was saying he was adding numbers to the buildings. Even though his question was about whether he was violating Google’s policies on privacy - I was kinda focused on the whole…Huh? You don’t have numbers on your buildings?

@WynLin , hi!

Obrigado!

Hi @MortenCopenhagen !

Thank you so much for your answer. It was very helpful!!

@WynLin , hi again!

Estou-me a explicar melhor agora?

Obrigado, e desculpa a minha confusĂŁo!
