Statue of King Bhoj, Bhopal
This statue of Raja Bhoj, a great king of the Parmar dynasty, stands proudly on a bastion of Fatehgarh Fort. Located on the serene waters of Bhopal’s Upper Lake, near Gauhar Mahal, it has become a popular spot for tourists and a superb location for photographs.
Raja Bhoj ruled the Malwa region from 1010 to 1055, and while it’s a popular belief that he founded the city of Bhopal, historical inscriptions from his era do not confirm this. The statue stands as a tribute to his legacy, even with this detail remaining a legend.
Bhoj was an exceptional ruler, revered not only for his military skills but also for his patronage of arts, science, and education. He was a devout follower of Lord Shiva, as evidenced by the famous Bhojpur Shiva temple he built. He also authored several books and promoted the Sanskrit language by establishing many schools.
The boundaries of his kingdom were vast, extending into parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka. Though his capital was Dhar, his contributions to the region are undeniable. After his death, his son, Jaysimha-I, likely succeeded him, but Bhoj is the one who is still remembered for his significant cultural and academic contributions.

Many people don’t know that Mihir Bhoj and Raja Bhoj both were different people. Here is the difference between the two.
Raja Bhoja of the Paramara dynasty ruled from Dhar in the early 11th century CE and is celebrated as a scholar-king and patron of art, literature, and science. He authored several works and established the Bhoj Shala as a center of learning. In contrast, Mihira Bhoja of the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty ruled from Kannauj in the 9th century CE and was a powerful military ruler known for expanding and consolidating a vast empire in northern India. While Raja Bhoja is remembered for his intellectual and cultural contributions, Mihira Bhoja is noted for his political strength and resistance against Arab invasions. Raja Bhoja’s reign is associated with the golden age of learning, whereas Mihira Bhoja’s era marked the zenith of the Pratihara Empire. The former emphasized knowledge and the arts, and the latter focused on military dominance and statecraft.
