The Shri Chamarajendra Park in Bengaluru, also known as Cubbon Park, features many historic buildings and statues. One striking monument is the life-sized marble statue of King Edward VII, located in Queen’s Park.
The statue stands on a high pedestal with inscriptions in four languages. The English inscription notes that Edward VII was King of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as Emperor of India, from 1901 to 1910.
Crafted by renowned British sculptor Leonard Jennings, the statue was erected in 1914 through public subscription. The excellent craftsmanship is evident in the detailed marble work, showcasing Jennings’s dedication to his art.
A separate inscription states that the statue was unveiled on November 28, 1919, by Frederick John Napier Baron Chelmsford, the then Viceroy and Governor-General of India. This monument stands as a testament to both British colonial history and the artistry of its time.
