Statue of buffalo demon Mahishasura at Chamundi Hill, Mysuru

Mahishasura Statue:

This statue depicts the Asura demon king Mahishasura, who was killed by the Hindu goddess Durga, also known as the goddess Chamundi. The statue is much larger than life, very colourful and depicts the asura with a sword in his right hand, while holding a snake in his left. The statue is much larger than life.

The statue is located on Chamundi Hill where he was killed by Durga.

Mysore is really named after a demon—Mahisha Asura. Originally, the city was known as “Mahishuru,” which means “Mahisha’s City.” Gradually, it came to be called Mysuru, which was later Anglicized to Mysore.

The statue of Mahishasura is nicely done!

And looks like it is freshly painted.

Also, I was never aware of the history behind the name of Mysuru though I do not remember calling it ever by the anglicized name.

I’ve always used names - Bengaluru, Mysuru :blush:
