Start my GM app with my city map

Hi!

Can Google Maps allow users to start Maps with selected area, like me opening GM app on the map of my city of Almaty? That would save us some time, especially as we use maps very often. Why do we all start with the map of USA even if we do not live there?

Maybe some option in Settings? Like:

  • 1 Use your last location as the start-up Map
  • 2 Use a specified location as the Start-up Map (select)

Hi @FeelGood,

Thanks for sharing!

Regarding the post, it would suggest when opening the Google Maps application, the start up screen should cover the location that you are in, correct?

Just to be sure, would you have visited the United States in the past with the location turned on?

@sonnyNg Hi, I have never been in US. Unfortunately, I wasn’t selected to Connect Live this year either.

I want to be able to choose which location to see at start-up. Not necessarily my current location (I don’t always turn my location on before opening GM.)

Would be nice to have let’s say 2 options in Settings

1 Use your last location as start-up Map

2 Use a specified location as Start-up Map (select)

Or/And

3 Use USA always

Hi @YerlanB ,

Thanks for the further description.

In case you have tried either one of the steps, please do skip them. As my first suggestion is to give a try with the first troubleshoot steps, to check if that may be the cause.

Follow up to that, do give a try to sign out of your account to see, as well.

As for the suggestion, it would be the best to share them individually, feel free to keep the same title, as you can name them Part 1, Part 2 and so on.

For the moment, this current post would be changed the status to Voting Open.

@sonnyNg I always, from maybe 2010 or even earlier, saw USA when I opened Google Maps. At least I think so.

Of course if I turn the location/GPS on and press Locate (the target sign at the right bottom), the app will send me to Almaty.

I just want to start at Almaty.

I will try your troubleshooting suggestions but I think that is not the case

Hi @YerlanB

I do not see much benefit in the idea.

Whenever the GPS & the location detection is on, the app always opens up showing the map of the area where you are present at that instant.

That is a remarkably useful feature as one can explore the surrounding quickly and also find directions to other places from that spot.

If something else is happening, please review the settings on your device. The GPS access should be “on” & the location detection is in “high accuracy mode”.

Yes, while overseas, I also felt a need occasionally to open the map with my home city as a starting point. But the nuisance of scrolling back to that was minuscule.

Hi @YerlanB ,

Thanks for the details!

Just to be sure, would you mind sharing the model of the device, OS version and the latest update of your Google Maps?

For the moment, as the main subject may incline more as a case to be checked as a possible issue, I would have changed the category to How-tos.

Further on, if the idea could still be built on the outcome of the case, feel free to share once again on the Idea Exchange board.

Interesting observation, @C_T !
