St. Mary’s Syro Malabar Catholic Basilica is situated at Church Street High Court Junction, Broadway, Marine Drive, Ernakulam, Kerala.
It’s one of the most revered places of worship among the Roman Catholic and Syrian Christians. It was established in the early twelfth century. It’s a Catholic Church where East Syrian Rituals are practiced. It’s popularly known as Nasrani Palli. This Church is facing towards the Port hence it is also referred as Port Church. It’s dedicated to Our Lady.
It’s a Bishop Seat or Cathedral and headquarter. This present building was built in Gothic style in the early 20th century in 1905. It was elevated to the status of Basilica. It has a grand Altar and very attractive interior with the art work depicted the last meal of the Holy Jesus. A brass plate is fixed at the entrance having the inscriptions " The Successor to the Throne of St. Peter Pope John Paul ii visited this Cathedral Basilica on 7th February 1986 ". Whereas on the left side of the entrance other brass plates have the inscriptions " CATHEDRAL OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF ERNAKULAM
ANGAMALY ".
St. Thomas Christians are also associated with this Church. Its magnificent architecture is captivating. At the top of Front towers having the statues of St. Paul and St. Peter and bell tower have the statue of St. Thomas. This popular Cathedral Basilica has daily morning masses from 5:45 am to 6:30 am and Sunday remains special as Ist mass on Sunday is offered at 5:45 am, 2nd at 07:30 am, 3rd at 09:00 am and the 4th at 06:30 pm in the evening.
