South Australian Baked Goods Adventures #safoodie #sabakedgoods

Three things: I love an adventure, I love decent coffee and I REALLY love a well made pie or fresh slice of sweet heaven.

So for the last year or so in the ole beloved hometown of Adelaide I’ve been searching for my favourite little bakery or “spot” to indulge in something baked and fresh.Check out my instagram feed here for my missions or search for #sabakedgoods on insta. It turns out there are plenty of secrets to uncover so here’s a list of the top 5:

  1. Yankalilla Bakery. This gem is an open secret and lives about a 70 minute drive from the city and is clear as day visible in the middle of the main street. Regardless of the time of day you’re there .,. expect to line up for good reason! The only slightly nonopen secret is the spinach, cheese and chicken hot pastries. I’m not too proud to say I’ve licked the paper bag they’ve been put in!

  1. Leabrook Bakery (15 minutes from the heart of the city of Adelaide) on Glynburn road in a little cluster of local shops as you head towards the hills.

Another complete gem run by the ex head pastry chef of fine dining restaurant, Magill Estate. If you’re game … (get it …get it game??? ) try the kangaroo pie. TO DIE FOR. Cakes … check out the link … TO DIE FOR.

  1. Bakery on O Connell 24 hour cravings are handled elegantly in this joint. About a 5 min drive from the city and located in North Adelaide, the highlight for me is A very decent vegan lentil pie . Accessibility options are good with ramps and toilets etc and the coffee is in the top third in terms of marks. Decent Adelaide Hills beans.

  2. The Baker’s Tray - Adelaide central market. In the heart of the famous Adelaide Central Market on Grote st / Gouger st in the city lies a little heralded secret. Looking like an ordinary bakery, this place sereves up fresh daily wonders that the staff at work love to massacre on a regular basis. Unlike some Central Market spots, the Bakers Tray are really well priced and the women behind the counter call you “darling”. Check out this massacre of our last chocolate cream sponge thing.

  3. Red Mill Bakery - Semaphore. About a 25 minute car ride away from the city and beachside, the Red Mill Bakery is a local haunt. No one I’ve ever known (aside from those wiht dietary restrictions) has ever been able to walk past their chocolate cake.
