Some maps exist since there is no digital map

Before I was in elementary school I was familiar with a collection of maps in the atlas book. The book consists of several maps of the provinces in the country. Not only that but also several countries, continents and the world along with the world clock line. Now, added some much knowledges.

Besides atlas book, I like that. Can also be called a wall map. This map explains my area at the district level within a province. In Indonesia, from a country divided into several provinces then divided into several cities and districts, then several sub-districts and finally some villages or small sub-districts(called kelurahan in bahasa) in city.

In all school, there must be a globe, contain a map of the world. This map is mostly used in schools not only knowing the country on the map but also about earth astronomy.

The conclusion of this story, even though we are already a digital map user like google maps and even have become a local guide, its existence cannot be separated because it contains history and also contains other knowledge.

Fully agree with you @Irfan_dPriyanto The school atlas shows much more useful information than the online maps like Google Maps which is purely a commercial product.

Hello @Irfan_dPriyanto

Hardcopy maps is always my best take.

It made me so good in Geography and also it helps me learn about history of some countries.

In my house we have old maps of when USSR is still intact. When the whole Africa was referred as Ethiopia etc.

It tells alot about development and state creations.

Hard copy Maps is an integral source of History. :grinning:

Hello @Irfan_dPriyanto ,
In this digital world, Atlases and wall maps are slowly disappearing and no one is buying anymore and they are rarely sold. An exception is still made, the use of wall maps or globes in universities and schools, but soon there will disappear.

I want to share two wall cards at my workplace that have been hanging there for more than 10 years.

The first map is right behind my chair and it is a road map of Bulgaria.

The second card is to my right and part of it is covered with an office folder cabinet. All the sights of Bulgaria are marked on this map.

When I was a student, my favorite subject was Geography, and because of my passion to explore the world, I got here.

Best regards!

@TusharSuradkar . Therefore, the map in the atlas book or similar books in your country is indeed very suitable for student.

Hello @Irfan_dPriyanto ,

Thanks for sharing your photos. Recently I was going through my old schoolbooks and I also found several atlases. It was such a nice experience to look for a city on the map and struggle with the small text on it. Now it’s easier, just type the name of the city and you are one click away to find it.

Thank you, @Austinelewex has shared your experience about this. It’s good stories. In addition, I have also seen a map of one large country which is divided into several official countries or also there are several countries that merge into one country.

You’re welcome, @MoniDi . Yes, google maps indeed make things easy from a static map to a dynamic map, you can zoom in and out just by pinching it if use mobile phone and now I never use google maps via desktop.

Hello @Irfan_dPriyanto

I appreciate the nostalgia in using paper maps.

Hello @TusharSuradkar

I compare a paper map to be something similar to a 2d paper drawing as against solid models, wherein we need not scratch our head to know whether that is in first or third angle.

Navigation using a paper map was always problematic.

Moreover, we yet do not know many obscure features in digital maps.
When searched correctly, Maps also shows the district & village boundaries.
The web version of the map also shows current weather & local time, & the international date line is very much there on the map.

Hai @Irfan_dPriyanto , @JordanSB , @NarenChandra , @Austinelewex , @TusharSuradkar and @C_T .

I still love to see Wall Maps and Atlas is as what @mockata2 share the photo, the contour of the land we can see it clearly, In the Maps it seem so flat.

I agree with @MoniDi about Google Maps, it easy to retrieve information about a place that I want to go, the direction, make a list of something in common in places.

Now what I saw in The Star Trek television serial movie is happen, the device that Mr Spock has is now in everybody hands, even smaller.

Keep calm, stay healthy and always be happy.

I remember all those printed maps in brochures and books. I collect some of the classic ones :). You are right… during our road trip, besides using google maps and digital platforms, we also have some back ups with those printed maps. It really helps @Irfan_dPriyanto

That’s a good analogy @C_T between Google Maps and 2D Drawings but I will still insist Google Maps doesn’t show a lot of information that a paper map does and also vice-versa, in that the paper maps don’t reveal much that Google Maps does. Both have their own ‘place’

That would be a good story for a new post @TusharSuradkar .

Can you list what you get from the paper maps but not in a Digital Map?

Good story, @indahnuria . I still like printed maps like map of Mudik or Eid homecoming every year.

Hi @C_T

I am neither a Google Maps critic nor a fanboy.

In the context of the article and my previous comment, here are a few things that I suppose Google Maps either cannot show or I don’t know how to extract these views:

States and capital of a country:

Rivers of a country:

Hello @TusharSuradkar

Appreciate your query.
Though I can provide some answers, however, it’s not fair to divert somebody else’s thread.
I had suggested creating a new post, maybe in how-to’s section so the topic will get more extensive attention.

Hi @C_T

The topic of this article is about atlas and if you check it, mine was the very first reply.

I am all appreciation for the atlas compared to Google Maps.

Each has its own benefits.

I believe it was you who asked to “list what you get from the paper maps but not in a Digital Map?”

I also see you suggested a new article but I do not see how the two are related.

Tushar
