[SOLVED] Crossing the border: Google couldn't verify your edit - Pietà di Michelangelo

[EDIT] The issue has been solved, for the happiness of millions of tourists

ORIGINAL POST HERE BELOW

According to Wikipedia "The Pietà (Italian: [pjeˈta]; English: “The Piety”; 1498–1499) is a work of Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo Buonarroti, housed in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City. "

This is also universally known and most tourists visiting Rome (Italy) also want to visit St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City. The first thing they look for, when they enter the huge church, is the statue of “Michelangelo’s Pietà”. The small statue is located not far from the entrance, on the right side of the right nave. Many are amazed by the fact that it is so small. Do you know about this statue, @DeniGu ?

I visited the Basilica on December 2006, and looking for this statue was the first thing I did. I can share with you only an old photo, taken with a pocket camera.

As I said, this is universally known, hope you agree with me, but …

But not for Google maps, or at least for the one who created the POI. Because, according to Google Maps, the statue is exactly in the middle of a busy road, on another country: Italy

Very close to the border, but still in Italy. According to the measurement I took on Google Maps, the POI must be moved 233 meters, and cross a border.

I believe the issue is crossing the border, moving the POI from a Country (Italy) to another (Vatican City).

I filled the necessary data, including the fact that the POI in located inside another one

I am not here to complain for a Not Applied edit, this is something that may happen to everyone.

I am here to ask Google to fix the issue, moving one of the most famous statue of the world away from the middle of a busy street

Thanks

Hi @ErmesT ,

I do know the statue, and while I was also surprised by its size, I found the details and emotions it represented fascinating. No wonder it attracts so many visitors.

As for the issue you’re reporting, I’ll forward it to the responsible team to investigate. Thank you!

Oh no, thank YOU @DeniGu , I will be happy to see the Pietà back to home, it really doesn’t matter if the edit is mine or not.

BTW, this is an interesting case study of the difference between the Public knowledge and the Information that Google Maps need to verify my edit.

Or, maybe the issue is really on the “crossing the border”, moving the statue from one country to another. :slightly_smiling_face:

I am extremely curious to know what the experts think about this situation, @Flash

Hi @ErmesT ,

If a feature is wrongly located across a border but the address shown is in the correct country then you should be able to fix it.

If it has an address that is in the incorrect country in the address, though, you cannot move it. Google might be able to move it, but I think every case I’ve seen is them actually deleting and replacing it, and then moving any data they can such as pictures to the new feature.

Thanks @Flash

That’s exactly the issue.

The POI is wrongly located on an Italian address (many people do not know that the Vatican is an independent country), while the real position of the POI is in Vatican City.

So It is not that my edit cannot be verified, but simply that I can’t move a POI between countries

@ErmesT I read this comment and I laughed stupidly! I hope you will forgive me.

I can imagine how you would have felt. I love this partucular statue.

We have so many of the remakes here in Nigeria. If I stare at it too long, I cry.

I am laughing because if I were in your shoes, I would have done exactly the same thing! How can this even be?! If the Pietà were ever located in the middle of the street, the street will have to shut down (due to Human traffic), I believe this would be fixed soon. I hope so

The smallest country in the world, right? @ErmesT

Yesterday I checked the Map of Rome just to search for the Pietà, @Ewaade_3A

I tried to move the statue away from the road a couple of years ago, and the edit was “Not Applied”. I supposed it was because of a lack of experience, and I gave UP. Two years later, I wanted to check the Map to see if someone with more experience was able to move the statue back inside the Basilica.

No way, the statue was still there, in the middle of the street. So I wanted to try again, adding all the appropriate information and … not applied again.

But I am sure Google will be able to move the statue.

Then we will have to put a small sign under the statue on Google Maps, for remembering the ones who worked hard to put the statue back on the correct position

I was having a serious thought about this, this morning and was wondering; "if we check in at a particular place, can it correct it?

@ErmesT

Like; if you go to the place it is located and you type in" Pieta" and Map asks; “are you here now?” and you respond; “No”, will it help?

No, it will not help @Ewaade_3A

The reply by Flash is pretty clear “If it has an address that is in the incorrect country in the address, though, you cannot move it

The possibility for an edit to be applied are not related to where you are, but the simple possibility for an edit to be verified.

I want to let you know that, while I was trying to fix this issue, I’ve found a Local Guide who was creating “photo collection” POIs in Google Maps in the area, just to add his photos. I closed 23 POIs in 2 hours (all approved) in the same area without any issue, because for the system was extremely easy to verify that my edit were right

What will this mean?

I’ve found a Local Guide who was creating “photo collection” POIs

@ErmesT

Well, it means that the Local Guide was creating Fake places on Google Maps where to add his “photo albums” of the vacations @Ewaade_3A .

Something like … “my best view of Venice” and so on

Ehehe…

May just be a Local Guide that hasn’t joined Connect. So, he doesn’t know ‘what’s happ

I am waiting for your official reply for adding a solution

Thanks to all the GOOGLE team, and a special personal thanks to you for escalating the issue.

The Pietà by Michelangelo is no longer in the middle of the street, now the statue is at home inside the St. Peter’s Basilica
