Since you seem to be focused on followers, here are some tips for getting followers.
But first, Google Maps is a tool for navigating and discovering interesting and useful places, not a social media platform.
This means that the best way to get followers is to post interesting content on Google Maps. Interesting content is always displayed when someone explores a place. People might be interested in following you to discover new places, or read your reviews.
It might also be helpful to make your Google Maps profile visible on your profile here in Connect. This way, people who look at your profile might see your contributions, and maybe be interested in following you.
Then there is also that (in my opinion horrible) procedure of following someone hoping to be followed back. Personally I consider it a bad habit, but I see that many people practice it.
