When people think about contributing to Google Maps, they often imagine adding photos, writing reviews, or discovering hidden places. For me, being a Google Local Guide is about much more than documenting destinations—it is about sharing the stories that shape our lives and communities.
Today, I would like to share a personal milestone that has become one of the most meaningful experiences of my journey: earning my first Kendo grade after six months of training.
Beginning a New Journey
Six months ago, I stepped into the dojo with curiosity and excitement, but also uncertainty. Kendo was completely new to me. I knew it was a traditional Japanese martial art, but I soon realised it was far more than learning how to hold a bamboo sword or practising techniques.
Every training session became a lesson in discipline, respect, patience, and self-improvement. Progress was never immediate. Some days I felt confident, while on other days I questioned whether I was improving at all. Yet every practice reminded me that growth comes from consistency rather than perfection.
Learning Beyond Technique
One of the greatest lessons Kendo has taught me is that success is not simply about winning or advancing in rank.
Each class challenged me to become mentally stronger, remain humble, and continue learning regardless of mistakes. Respect for instructors, training partners, and opponents is at the heart of every practice.
As someone who works as an independent journalist, I found surprising similarities between journalism and kendo. Both require patience, continuous learning, discipline, integrity, and the courage to improve every day. Whether covering an important story or practising a single strike hundreds of times, meaningful progress only comes through dedication.
Examination Day
After six months of regular training, I finally reached the day of my grading examination.
Standing before the Board of Examiners was both exciting and nerve-racking. Every movement reflected months of preparation, repetition, and determination. While I naturally hoped to pass, I also reminded myself that the examination represented something greater—the opportunity to demonstrate everything I had learned throughout my journey.
When I learned that I had successfully fulfilled all the requirements and satisfied the Board of Examiners, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Receiving my Kendo grade was not simply about earning a certificate. It symbolised six months of commitment, perseverance, and personal growth.
Gratitude to My Sensei and Senpai
No achievement is accomplished alone.
I owe my sincere gratitude to my sensei, Shota Nakagawa, and Hiroki Kitaura, as well as my senpai, whose professionalism, patience, encouragement, and unwavering dedication have guided me throughout this journey.
Their instruction went far beyond teaching techniques. They taught discipline, respect, perseverance, and the importance of maintaining a positive mindset even when training became difficult.
Every correction, every piece of advice, and every challenge helped me improve step by step. Their belief in my potential inspired me to keep moving forward, even during moments when I doubted myself.
This milestone reflects not only my own effort but also the incredible guidance and support I received from everyone at the dojo.

It has introduced me to Japanese culture, lifelong learning, and a welcoming community that encourages personal growth.
Every place has stories waiting to be discovered, and every community has people who inspire us to become better versions of ourselves.
Looking Ahead
Although earning my first Kendo grade is an important milestone, I know it is only the beginning.
There are still countless techniques to master, lessons to learn, and challenges to overcome. The path of Kendo is a lifelong journey, and I look forward to continuing that journey with humility, determination, and gratitude.
