Silo Art Trail, Wimmera Mallee, Australia

Many local areas are looking for ways to attract visitors. One of our favourites is following Silo Art Trials. We started the Wimmera Mallee art trial in Rupanyup with the Julia Volchkova depiction of local rural youth. The nearby visitor information centre can provide a hard copy visitor map to help navigate between silos.

The silos are spread out over 50 kms, and many are located in the country, so a car is handy.

We stopped in the small village of Beulah and set up camp at the Beulah Caravan Park. Nice shady and grassy camp site next to Little Yarriambiack Creek waterhole (nice share walking path around the waterhole)

Heading north up the trail to Rosebery. Artist Kaffeine focused on the self reliant character of many of the local male and female farmers. The Mallee can be a harsh, dry environment.

Further north is the Lascelles silo which depicts local couple Geoff and Merrilyn

Finally the northern most silo in Patchewollock.

Of course, we can not visit this part of Victoria without visiting the best vanilla slice bakery in Australia. Sharp’s Bakery in Birchip has pick up Australia’s number one vanilla slice award a number of times. We recommend getting half dozen and also getting there early, they tend to sell out.

Hi @Zeg the Silo Art trail is fun. There are a lot of new ones since my last trek and when we get out of lockdown I might just go for another wander around the countryside. Here is my Map list of the ones I’ve visited https://goo.gl/maps/t61K66XfYkwCiJeR8

@PaulPavlinovich We really noticed the difference the silo murals made to a town, little out of the way places were developing caravan parks and accommodation. It didn’t hurt that we also really enjoyed the Mallee country. Hope we can travel Oz again post Covid. cheers Z

Hello @Zeg ,

Thank you for sharing this amazing location and beautiful photos with us! Every single illustration is so well done, a real masterpiece! Do you have a favorite one?

As a street art lover, if one day I visit Australia, I will definitely go to this particular place.

I’m sharing with you a photo of a street art that I took few days ago in Sofia, Bulgaria.

@BorrisS Thanks for sharing your mural. Very colourful!

I guess I like all the silos, the thing that really impressed me is the size, hard to tell from the photos but the silos are huge, especially when compared to the surrounding very flat Australian landscape.

They most likely already had those caravan parks @Zeg but yes I know what you mean, if only 10% of the people in the silo town stop at a local shop or pub that will bring quite a bit more business. The Grampians and Kerang (towns at either end of the trail more or less) certainly have picked up quite a lot more people.
