Entering the Sikandra complex begins with a gesture of reverence at the Salami Darwaza. This red sandstone archway stands exactly 5’7" tall, Emperor Akbar’s own height, compelling visitors to bow their heads slightly to pass through. This humble entry leads to the magnificent Jahangir Gate and a sprawling Charbagh, framing the unique five-storey palace-like mausoleum that rises majestically over the Emperor’s grave, distinct from traditional domed Mughal structures.

Before accessing the basement crypt, one enters a stunning Golden Chamber that acts as a vestibule. The walls and vaulted ceilings here are a masterpiece of intricate ornamentation, glowing with gold and blue floral patterns and beautiful calligraphy of Quranic verses. The monument’s exterior reflects perfect symmetry; the grand central archway is flanked by five smaller arches on either side, repeating on all sides of the square plan to create a harmonious and imposing facade.

The structure’s engineering class is most evident in the solemn basement grave chamber. Standing behind the simple white cenotaph and looking back through the long, narrow corridor, one witnesses a perfect alignment: the center of the distant Salami Darwaza is absolutely aligned and clearly visible. This deliberate precision visually connects the deep inner sanctum directly to the outer entry, ensuring the Emperor’s presence is felt from the very first step into the complex.
