Shri Gavi Gangadhareshwara Swamy Temple, located in Gavipuram Extension, is one of Bengaluru’s oldest cave temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Carved out of a single monolithic rock, the sanctum houses the Shiva Linga along with idols of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati, Nandi, and Surya.
It is a common belief that on Makar Sankranti, the rays of the setting sun pass through the horns of the Nandi and directly fall on the Shiva Linga, symbolizing divine alignment. The most important annual celebration here is Maha Shivaratri when grand special poojas are conducted with great devotion.
Being a cave temple, devotees need to bend down while entering and during pradakshina inside the cave, which can be challenging for elderly devotees and tall persons, but it also adds to the spiritual experience of visiting this ancient shrine.
