Showing appreciation for Local Guides who think outside the box to update the Map

Thankful Thursday is a recurring feature on Connect showcasing some of the most dedicated Local Guides in our community. Know someone who deserves to be featured? Let us know via the official Local Guides Nomination Form.

On today’s Thankful Thursday, we want to give thanks to those who think outside the box to contribute on Google Maps in a unique way. Local Guide Shailah has been instrumental in putting Georgina Island, an island on Lake Simcoe in Ontario, on the Map. She collaborated with educators from the school on the island and took 360 imagery to upload on Google Maps.

“I am hoping we can continue the collaboration with the educators at the school on Georgina Island to further explore their community,” she told us. “I am looking for similar initiatives to be a part of and/or help other places put their communities on the map.”

“Being a Local Guide gives me the power to share my voice with others within the community and around the world. I enjoy taking photos and writing about my experiences. It helps me learn more about myself and all the wonderful places around me where I can visit.”

Join us in celebrating this awesome Local Guides in the comments! Know someone who should be featured? Tell us about them using our nomination form.

Your posts are always very unique. I really respect you, Katie.

I like that this new feature will help many Google Local Guides do what everyone is used to and redirect our minds towards the major reasons we are here.

I will be here for this.

An inspiring story @KatieMcBroom

Can’t help recall my own recent experience of adding a historical place to maps.

Now that is it on Google Maps I am sure more people will discover it and save the place from falling into oblivion.

It also gave me an opportunity to interact with locals and introduce them to Google Maps, a Win-Win

Amazing initiative :star_struck::star_struck::star_struck: I am personally a believer of “Why FIT IN when you are meant to STAND OUT ??” Thinking out of the box and embracing the uniqueness makes us our authentic self… Cheers to all and lots of best wishes for this innovative concept :sparkles: :sparkles: :sparkles:

Such a cool initiative, @KatieMcBroom and @Shailah !

I love the idea of finding areas that need some love and attention and going out and doing it yourself.

Hi @KatieMcBroom why this Island was not added to Google’s Map before @Shailah added it

?

Are there still lands not exist in Google’s Maps ?

Regards

เป็นเพื่อนต่างภาษาแต่ใกล้ชิดเหมือนบ้านเดียวกันทำให้เรื่องที่ ไกลเกินไปถีงกลับกลายเป็นชุมชนเดียวกันครับ

This is a great story and inspiration for other LGs in the community. @Shailah Super stuff. I red your post and seems you had a lot of fun doing the project. Keep up your good work. I myself is a 360 and Streetview enthusiast and try to cover my country with street view.

Cheers from Sri Lanka
