I have an idea to improve Google Maps. It would be great to have a specific filter option that allows us to easily find the newest shops and businesses in an area. This would make discovering recently opened places much simpler for everyone.
I think this is a really practical idea. Sometimes when a new shop opens nearby it doesnโt show up easily because it gets buried under older listings with more reviews and photos. A filter for newly opened places would help people discover fresh spots quickly and give these small businesses a fair chance to get noticed.
What I can say on my understanding:
Pros
Helps users find new shops and restaurants without endless scrolling.
Gives visibility to small and recently opened businesses that donโt have many reviews yet.
Encourages exploration and keeps Maps feel more up to date.
Cons(as a software Engineer myself, I can say)
Maps would need a reliable way to track opening dates, and not all businesses update their info accurately.
Some places might show up as new even if they just changed names or ownership, which could be confusing.
Too many filter options can sometimes make the app harder to use if the UI isnโt clean.
Overall I think:
One way could be to add a Recently Opened tag or badge based on official opening date fields or first review date. Then users can sort by that tag or even have a toggle in the Explore section. This gives the benefit of discovery without cluttering the interface.
Newly constructed buildings are not registered on Street View.
Additionally, when a new store opens in an area inaccessible to Street View vehicles (such as pedestrian-only shopping streets), it cannot be registered and will be rejected.
