She Leads: Sonia – Empowering Others by Sharing Strength and Wisdom

Hello Local Guides!
Today, I’m happy to introduce you to @SoniaK from Richardson, Texas :united_states:.
Sonia is currently between jobs and using this time to enjoy the things she loves most traveling, reading, and trying new foods from around the world. She enjoys cooking at home and adding her own twist to dishes she discovers on her travels.
Sonia also loves being creative, especially through embroidery and spending time in the kitchen. This time has helped her slow down, explore new hobbies, and think about what’s next.

When did you become a Local Guide?
I joined the Local Guides program on May 21, 2015, shortly after it launched.
My love for travelling and passion for helping others inspired me. I wanted to share my experiences, give helpful tips, and make it easier for others to explore new places.

What inspires you to contribute to Local Guides Connect?
I enjoy sharing knowledge. Whenever I browse through Connect, I find so many helpful posts about Google Maps and the Local Guides program. They teach me new things, and that motivates me to give back by sharing what I know too. It feels great knowing that something I’ve shared could help or inspire someone else.

What is your favourite type of contribution? Why?
I enjoy posting photos, checking accessibility options, and verifying facts. I also like checking meal selections since I don’t eat pork, it’s important for me to review menus and share that information for others with similar needs. Lately, I’ve started uploading videos of places to work toward my Expert Director badge I’m only 250 videos away!

How do you define leadership, and what does it mean to you?
Leadership is a big word, and honestly, I don’t think I can define it any better than a dictionary would. But to me, leadership means having the ability to inspire and influence others. A leader has vision, purpose, and empathy. They’re not afraid to learn from others while also guiding them. A true leader makes a positive impact, leads with understanding, and lifts people up. To me, leadership is not about being fearless in the storm it’s about teaching others how to dance in the rain.

What keeps you motivated to lead and contribute?
What keeps me motivated to both guide and contribute is the impact I see in others. When someone tells me I’ve inspired them to find their own path, it reinforces the value of sharing my perspectives. This motivates me to continue offering what I know. I believe that by sharing our individual strengths and knowledge, we can collectively navigate challenges more effectively. After all, the beautiful thing about knowledge is that it grows when we give it away.

Who inspires you the most, and why?
There is not one single individual that inspires me the most. I get inspired by so many people, all the time. When I see the potential in others to find their own strength and stand out they inspire me. When I see someone smiling despite all the hurdles around them, they inspire me. When I see someone planning for a trip to Antarctica, despite the extremely low temperature, they inspire me. In short, when I see the inner strength in someone that’s continuously inspiring others like a burning candle, they inspire me.

How do you think we can inspire more women to be a part of our community?

We can inspire more women to join our community by actively showcasing the value and impact of participation, sharing our positive experiences and knowledge. It’s also crucial to proactively address the social obstacles that might prevent women from engaging. This involves creating a supportive and empathetic environment where their concerns are heard and they feel empowered to contribute.

Have you faced any challenges? How did you overcome them?

Absolutely. Growing up in a third-world country with a conservative family meant navigating several challenges. However, by staying focused on my goals and consistently keeping my family informed about my activities, I built their comfort. Their primary concern was my safety, so once I assured them that my contributions to Maps didn’t compromise it, their worries lessened. Additionally, emphasizing the opportunity to connect with people from diverse cultures and learn from them further eased their concerns and even made them happy.

What barriers do you face to contribute in community as a women and how do you overcome them?

One of the first hurdles I faced as a woman contributor was the feeling of vulnerability regarding my safety. My strategy to overcome this involved taking control of my digital footprint by not sharing live location data or future plans publicly. Balancing my responsibilities to family, work, and the community was another challenge, which I addressed by setting clear priorities and using my spare moments for Maps. Additionally, I navigated the traditional bias where women’s voices might be overlooked. My approach was to consistently share valuable, authentic information and personal insights, which ultimately allowed me to earn the trust and respect of the community, where my contributions are now valued for their merit rather than my gender.

What message would you like to share with women around the world?
To all the women around the world: your voice matters, your contributions are valuable, and your strength is immense. Don’t let anything hold you back from sharing your knowledge and making your mark on the world. Be brave, be authentic, and support each other. Together, we can create communities where everyone thrives.
