Hello Local Guides,
Today, I am excited to shine the She leads spotlight on a very kind and inspiring woman from our community @RosyKohli from Mumbai, India. She is a former teacher who has done many things in her life. After getting married, she focused on taking care of her children, which she believes is a true blessing. Even while staying at home, she kept working by doing costume designing, stitching, and working as a Tupperware manager from 2013 to 2018.
Later, she returned to teaching at her son’s school and also started giving tuition classes. Now, she spends her time doing counselling, social work, and helping to empower women and students. Rosy is a strong and caring person who always tries to make a positive difference in people’s lives.
When and how did you become a Local Guide?
In October 2018, while I was in Delhi for my cousin sister’s wedding, I went shopping at Chandni Chowk. A shopkeeper there requested me to leave a review on Google Maps, which I was unaware of at the time. He took my phone, typed in his shop’s name, and asked me to review it. I was impressed by his artificial jewelry collection, so I gave a 5-star rating. I only wrote a short review, as I didn’t know much then — I didn’t post any photos or mention accessibility.
As I continued shopping, other shopkeepers also asked me to leave reviews, and I happily obliged. Soon after, I received an email inviting me to become a Google Local Guide. Curious, I replied “yes” and asked how I could join and contribute further.
What inspires you to contribute to Local Guides Connect?
My inspiration to contribute to Local Guides Connect began on November 24, 2018, at the Top Neighbour’s Meet-up held at Hopplppola, Khar, Mumbai, where I was one of the top contributors in the Neighbour’s Community. Among many Local Guides present, it was @Shrut19 who truly inspired me. She introduced me to Local Guides Connect and encouraged me to join.
I had many questions, and while she answered some, she promised to explain everything in detail the next day. Her guidance and support sparked my journey, and since then, I’ve been actively contributing and connecting with the community.
What is your favourite type of contribution? Why?
My favourite contribution is writing reviews on Google Maps in details to help users Initially, I focused on reviews and photos, but during the lockdown, I learned about Accessibility and the importance of accessibility by @KashifMisidia bhai & @JaneBurunina . I started mentioning accessibility details in my reviews, using wheelchair emojis then Inspired by @Anil6969 and @Sagir took pledge in meet up give 1 Star less and suggesting improvements to business owners. I also adjust ratings based on accessibility to encourage inclusivity. On Local Guides Connect, I enjoy sharing food and drink recipes.
How do you define leadership, and what does it mean to you?
To me, leadership means guiding a team by valuing everyone’s ideas and moving forward together. A true leader listens and includes all voices regardless of qualifications or language fluency and creates a space for collaboration. Leadership is not about giving orders, but about inspiring, respecting, and uniting people to achieve a common goal.
In what ways do you lead or make an impact outside of Local Guides Connect?
I don’t see myself as someone making a big impact outside Local Guides Connect, but I always strive to help those around me. When people come to me with problems, I listen patiently and offer multiple solutions without discussing their issues with others. My goal is to help them find ways to make their lives more beautiful with there hard work sincerely & prayers.
In today’s fast-paced world, stress is everywhere whether at home or work. I always encourage people to be happy, enjoy their work when you are in work place, and at home enjoy every moment with family, not let pressure take over. I believe in contributing naturally rather than forcing myself to go out just for reviews. Life isn’t a race; slow and steady also wins.
I also remind myself and others not to be jealous of someone else’s success. Instead, I analyze what they did to be appreciated and reflect on whether my contributions truly deserve recognition. This mindset helps me grow, work harder, and improve myself
What keeps you motivated to lead and contribute?
When I come to know my contribution & my reviews and photos are genuinely helping people. When I receive emails from Google stating that my reviews are helpful & that my photos have received thousands of views, it makes me happy and encourages me to do more. Seeing the impact of my contributions motivates me to keep going.
Appreciation from Google, such as receiving gifts like socks (my first gift), bottles, and caps, also keeps me inspired. Being invited to Google events and recognized for my efforts adds to my enthusiasm.
Additionally, earning badges for my contributions and seeing my posts on Local Guides Connect, especially food posts, getting appreciated or trending, further boosts my motivation. Hosting meetups and receiving positive feedback from participants also inspires me to continue making an impact.
Who inspires you the most, and why?
Shruti inspires me the most. She’s not only my mentor but also a selfless guide who always supports others. I’ve learned so much from her kindness and leadership.
Apart from Shruti, many Local Guides have inspired me especially during the lockdown. I’ve been motivated by @ErmesT for community service, @PaulPavlinovich @TravellerG for photography, and Kashif and Jane for their work in accessibility. Reading their posts, attending meetups, and learning from this global community helped me grow and led to the honour of receiving the Guiding Star recognition. Their passion continues to inspire me every day.
How do you think we can inspire more women to be a part of our community?*
To inspire more women to join our community, we can host small meetups in familiar spaces like homes or local venues give them some appreciation gift for coming. These gatherings can introduce women, to Google Maps and Local Guides. By sharing our experiences, we can show them how easy it is to contribute. Hands-on learning, real-life examples, and a fun, social approach will make it engaging. we should invite women passionate about helping others. As they learn and share, the community will grow naturally.
Have you faced any challenges? How did you overcome them?
Yes, in 2019, I faced a financial setback. It was a difficult time, but I was fortunate to receive support from the parents of my tuition students, who paid fees in advance. Additionally, my colleagues and friends offered help, though I chose to rely on my faith and inner strength to navigate the situation.
During the lockdown, my son took the initiative to help by cooking at home. When a friend showed interest in buying his meals, he quickly set up a small food service, which became popular in our local community. Orders started coming in, and this unexpected opportunity helped us through a challenging time.
What barriers do you face to contribute to the community as a woman and how do you overcome them?
As a woman, balancing my roles as a mother, wife, and daughter often makes it challenging to contribute actively to the community. My family is always my priority. However, I manage this by setting aside personal time, particularly on weekends, to participate in meetups and community activities. I also involve my son in household tasks, helping to break stereotypes and preparing him for the future.
I overcome these challenges through effective planning and strong support from my family. For instance, during a one-week trip to Delhi, they ensured everything ran smoothly in my absence, allowing me to pursue my passions without feeling overwhelmed
What message would you like to share with women around the world?
My message to women is to balance responsibilities while making time for yourself. Care for your family, but also dedicate at least half an hour daily for self-care whether it’s prayer, meditation, or enjoying a hobby. Cook the dishes you love, even if your family doesn’t share the same taste. I learned that self-care is essential.
Additionally, practice healthy detachment from your children to help them become independent. Remember to spend time with friends, enjoy life, and prioritize your own happiness too.
Rosy’s journey is a powerful reminder that leadership takes many forms whether in our work, communities, or personal challenges. As women, we possess the strength, creativity, and determination to break through any barrier. Let’s continue to support, inspire, and uplift each other, empowering ourselves and others every step of the way.
