Hello Local Guides
As a part of on-going series She Leads I would like to talk about @NunungAfuah , a passionate freelancer digital consultant and wife from Malang, Indonesia. When she’s not busy working, she enjoys reading and cooking. She is an active member of the Local Guides community, making a positive impact with her reviews and contributions.
When and how did you become a Local Guide?
I became a Local Guide around in 2016 when I started actively exploring my neighbourhood. I noticed some inaccuracies and missing details on Google Maps, so I began editing places and adding reviews to help improve the map for others.
What inspires you to contribute to Local Guides Connect?
My journey as a Local Guide began organically. I’ve always been curious about my surroundings, and I started exploring my neighbourhood more. I quickly realized that Google Maps, while helpful, wasn’t always completely accurate or up-to-date, especially for local businesses and hidden gems. I found myself wanting to correct information, add missing places, and share my experiences through reviews and photos. That’s when I discovered the Local Guides program, and I’ve been contributing ever since.
What is your favourite type of contribution? Why?
Reviews are my favourite contribution. I’ve personally relied on Google reviews countless times to discover hidden gems and avoid potential letdowns. I want to pay that forward by sharing my own honest opinions and experiences. It’s satisfying to know that my reviews can help others navigate their local area and make the most of their time.
How do you define leadership, and what does it mean to you?
Leadership, in my view, is about creating a safe and supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable and respected. This starts with actively listening to people’s voices, ensuring that their perspectives are heard and valued. For me, this is particularly important in creating a space that is inclusive of all genders, where everyone feels safe to contribute and thrive.
In what ways do you lead or make an impact outside of Local Guides Connect?
Outside of Local Guides Connect, I focus on building real-world connections. I regularly meet with community members at local cafes or events, where I actively listen to their experiences and concerns. I also connect with local business owners, sharing how Local Guides can help them reach a wider audience. And I use social media platforms like Instagram to showcase the positive impact of Local Guides, sharing photos and stories of how we’re improving our community.
What keeps you motivated to lead and contribute?
The core of my motivation lies in the impact I can have on others. The feeling that I’m making a positive contribution to someone’s day, or helping them solve a problem, is incredibly fulfilling. Whether it’s through sharing accurate information on Google Maps or fostering a sense of community, knowing that I’m making a difference keeps me inspired to lead and contribute.
Who inspires you the most, and why?
I don’t have a single individual in mind, but I’m deeply inspired by the concept of ‘powerful women.’ These are women who embody strength, confidence, and leadership. They inspire me to challenge my own limitations, to embrace my potential, and to strive for excellence in everything I do. Their examples serve as a constant reminder that I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
How do you think we can inspire more women to be a part of our community?
I believe we can inspire more women to join our community by fostering a truly inclusive and supportive environment. This means actively encouraging women to speak their voices and ensuring their opinions are not only heard but valued. We need to create spaces where women feel safe to share their perspectives, and we must demonstrate that we are genuinely listening and responding to their needs. Furthermore, organizing engaging and inclusive meetups and movements that highlight the contributions and achievements of women within our community can be incredibly powerful.
