Hello Local Guides
Today, I am excited to introduce @Erna_LaBeau a passionate Claims Consultant, Business Owner, and dedicated Local Guide from Detroit, Michigan. Erna is not only an avid lover of outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and kayaking, but she’s also committed to sharing her knowledge and experiences with the world.
Erna’s journey as a Local Guide began in May 2017 when she added her first photo to Google Maps. A year later, in April 2019, she took the next step and joined Local Guides Connect, discovering how her love for photography could help others. Since then, Erna has been actively contributing to the community, especially focused on sharing the beauty and accessibility of her city and state with the world.
Here’s a look into her impactful and inspiring journey :
When and how did you become a Local Guide?
My first photo added to Google Maps was in May 2017, and my first post in Local Guides Connect was on April 7, 2019. I started as a Local Guide after realizing that my passion for photography could help contribute to Google Maps and showcase the places I love.
What inspires you to contribute to Local Guides Connect?
Being part of something bigger than myself. I love the idea of contributing to a community and helping others discover new places and experiences.
What is your favourite type of contribution? Why?
I enjoy sharing information about my wonderful city and state. Michigan has so much to offer, and I want to highlight the accessibility that is already in place, especially for those who may face mobility challenges. Adding new businesses to Google Maps, publishing photos, and writing reviews are all ways I enjoy contributing.
How do you define leadership, and what does it mean to you?
Leadership is the ability to guide others toward a positive attitude and a common goal. As a mentor, I find it satisfying and rewarding to help others succeed.
In what ways do you lead or make an impact outside of Local Guides Connect?
As a business owner, I work with others to create memorable events for people on their special days. It’s a privilege to be part of their celebrations and make a positive impact on their lives.
What keeps you motivated to lead and contribute?
Pride and personal satisfaction keep me motivated. Knowing that my contributions can help others makes me feel accomplished.
Who inspires you the most, and why?
There are three people who have inspired me the most:
- Jeroen Mourik (@JeroenM), who opened the door to the Local Guides world.
- Kashif Misidia (@KashifMisidia), who introduced me to accessibility for people with disabilities.
- Ermes Tuon (@ErmesT), who introduced me to Google Earth.
Have you faced any challenges? How did you overcome them?
Every day is a challenge, especially when adapting to changing conditions in my industry and with each individual I meet. Flexibility and perseverance help me overcome these challenges.
What message would you like to share with women around the world?
Be strong, be independent, believe in yourself, encourage others, and never let anyone bring you down. We are capable of achieving anything we set our minds to.
