Shabu Shabu is a Japanese Hot Pot dish that features sliced meat and veggies. The marinated meat is served raw and is cooked at the table in a hot pot or skillet. This gives you the option to have your preferred doneness.
I visited Miso Japanese and Thai restaurant, Maitama, Abuja to try out their Shabu Shabu. Miso is the only restaurant in Abuja that offers Shabu Shabu. The different meat I tried was seasoned and infused with spices, garlic, chilli, mustard and soya. While eating, I learnt that shabu shabu is a food experience that’s great for bonding and sharing. Typically, phones and gadgets should be abandoned when it’s time for eating it. I enjoyed this experience with some friends, it was a fun way to bond and share.
For starters, we had a sweet corn soup with homemade chicken meat balls. The soup was rich, tasty and had a subtle kick of heat. We also had goat meat, chicken, beef, prawn and orange skewers, sausage and pineapple skewers, fish, garlic fried rice and an array of sauces like bbq, pepper, chilli and garlic. All the meat was nicely seasoned except the beef which was a bit overpowering and salty. We particularly liked the chicken and how well the rice paired with the Nigerian pepper sauce. Finally for drinks, we enjoyed some pints of ice cold beer.
The experience was lovely and a unique way of having a meal. Shabu Shabu is best shared with friends or family and in our own case, I got to share it with some friends in Abuja.
