What is it in black colour? Dump, garbage or anything else!
This is most likely tholeiitic basalt, a volcanic rock formed from cooled lava. - this is as per Google search. Correct me if I am wrong @Avane6
That’s a great question! While Puerto Rico doesn’t have any currently active volcanoes, its volcanic history plays a big role in those black sand beaches.
Here’s the breakdown:
- Ancient Volcanoes: Millions of years ago, Puerto Rico was formed by volcanic activity. Over time, these volcanoes became extinct.
- Erosion: The black sand comes from eroded volcanic rock. Rain, waves, and wind break down these old lava flows and volcanic deposits.
- Composition: The black color comes from minerals like magnetite and basalt, which are common in volcanic rock.
Where to find black sand beaches in Puerto Rico:
While not all beaches in Puerto Rico have black sand, there are a few notable spots: - Playa Negra, Vieques: This is probably the most famous black sand beach in Puerto Rico.
- Playa Lucia, Yabucoa: Another popular spot known for its striking black sand.
- Parts of Culebra: Some beaches on the island of Culebra also have sections of black sand.
It’s a beautiful beach, I could spend hours in here
