Sea Sun Sand + Surf Weligama - Sri Lanka

Hiiii My local guides friends. I’m writing this post after some time. My country was going through a very difficult time and as citizens, we all had a very difficult year 20022. However, we are resilient and we are trying to bounce back.

My country the Island Nation Sri Lanka is a popular tourist destination for many reasons. Beautiful Nature, Wildlife, Ritch and colorful culture, and ancient heritage sites are some of those. Sandy beaches around the country are one of the biggest attractions among those.

We have long beautiful sandy beaches all around the country. However, not all of those beaches are known for Surfing. But we have many great surf spots for beginner to Medium to advanced levels. Weligama is one such great Surfing destination. Actually, Weligama is world-famous for surfing.

Weligama is located in the Southern coast of Sri Lanka and it is about and 2hr drive from the Capital.

Transport

For locals or Tourists, it’s very easy to find different modes of transport to Weligama Surf Beach.

Express Way- Driving

Expressway - Buses

Costal Line Trains ( if you are looking for a laid-back ride along the cost line in a train, Id recommend the train. But it takes twice the time)

Weligama beach is a Natural Bay . That’s what make is uniquely suitable for surfing. They bay creates long and wawes which is suitable for surfing.

What makes it more special is this has a very shallow depth. You could walk into the sea 100m and yet the water level would be up to your Chest level. Becuse of this, Weligama is very famous for Surf beginners. Because you could start learning and practicing in shallow areas. However, if you are an advanced surfer you could go much further and catch amazing waves.

Surf Lessons

There are many surf schools along the beach and there are many good instructors. 1.5hr surf lesson would cost around 12 USD which is pretty affordable. if you don’t want a lesson you could always rent a surfboard for an hour for ~1.2 USD.

There are some places that offer you 1 to 4 weeks of all-inclusive surf packages with accommodations and food and surf lessons. + You have options to choose or combine Yoga Lessons and Surf lessons. This may cost 200-600 USD depending on the package and period

Accommodation

There are plenty of accommodation options around Weligama. From very cheap to luxury villas

Hostels - 6-8 USD (Bed only) 9-12 USD Bed and Breakfast. (With AC) you may find lesser prices (4-5USD) if you are ok with non-AC options.

Regular Double Rooms in lodges - 10-25 USD

Hotel Rooms - 50-60 USD

Luxury Villas/Shallays -75-120 USD

There could be outliers outside these ranges. But on average if you are planning to visit Weligam for a Surf trip you could rely on these numbers.

Food - You could find all kinds of foof around Weligama. From standard English breakfast to Italian Pizzas, Fried Rice, Infamous Kottu Roti, Smoothie bowls to vegan or gluten-free food. You always have local Rice and Curry options everywhere.

The locals are really friendly and will help out with any info and guidance. Safe to travel even during late nights.

Speaking of Nights. usually, there are Parties every night. You can find the designated party location from posters at Restaurants and handouts.

This place looks like fun, Ravindu…Weligma Bay surely has a lot to offer here and I can see many cafes and restaurants . DO you go diving here as well?

HaHa Yesss @indahnuria . But I’m still learning the ropes of Surfing. Catching a wave is kind of a art. Need a lot of practice to master it.

Weligama is not known for Diving, But a few kms away we have Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa known for Diving. Come to Sri Lanka and let’s go surfing and diving together. I miss my LG and Diving buddy @kasunaaa a lot.

No wonder you are Guiding Star @ravindus . Congratulations. Thanks for the beautiful post.

I know Sri Lanka is a very beautiful country and I always longed to visit your country. I have heard about the beautiful island Nation, from my daughter, when she visited her friend’s friend in Colombo. You have given a clear description about Weligama and how to visit the beautiful beach. I will make a point to visit this place when I visit Sri Lanka.

Yes 2022 was a testing year for many of us and I am really proud of you that you bounce back. I should learn so much from you, the younger generation. I pray to God to shower his blessings for the betterment of everyone. I would like to take this opportunity to thank @KashifMisidia for sharing the link so that I could read your post.

@JaneBurunina , Thank you for your kind compliments on my writing  . You are always welcome to visit our little Island :desert_island: . Sure we will take you to all the beautiful places and of course you could try Surfing, snorkeling, and even Discovery Scuba diving for beginners.

Yes In Weligama you could swim too.

South/West cost season is from end November to March

East cost season is from April to October.

We get a lot of tourists in December due to the Winter season in Western countries. From December to March you don’t we don’t have Monsoon rains. But Rain is a bit unpredictable in Sri Lanka. We may have passing showers from time to time.

@ravindus Since I had to pursue my higher studies in a new territory, I missed my motherland and lots of fun activities with you. I always worried about missing opportunities and fun. I could join you if I were in Sri Lanka. As you said Weligama is the best place for novice surfers like me. I always wanted to try surfing but never had the guts to try, as @indahnuria mentioned. @indahnuria We must meet someday to do some diving meetup together, as Ravindu mentioned.
