Sawan Bhadon Towers, Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, India.
During the visit to Orchha, two tall towers attracted me a lot near the Raja Ram temple where ancient palaces etc. were visible. Due to this curiosity, I could get acquainted with the historical monuments like Palki Mahal, Phool Bagh, Shree Hardaul Baithika etc. These towers are known as Sawan Bhadon Towers.
In fact, these square towers were built for the purpose of keeping the basement of Phool Bagh Palace cool during the summer months, which are connected to the underground structures through water reservoir, ducts and tunnels. These towers are much higher than the palace. There are square vent holes on the four sides of the towers for the exit of hot air and the entry of cold air at the same level on each storey and the upper floors have pyramid-like roofs. Below these roofs are three arched vent holes on each side built in a way to catch the wind. The outer sides of these towers are plastered with plain lime mortar as these towers are brick built. This is one of the indigenous Persian cooling system and probably still surviving.
Regarding these towers one legend is associated which is not fact as it’s a cooling system which was adopted from Persia.
