Gwalior Fort is an ancient fortress situated on a hill. This fort has been in existence since the third century. This fort was built by King Suraj Sen. There is a Sas Bahu temple inside this fort. This temple was the subject of our curiosity. And last year we got the opportunity to see its architecture and sculpture. It is a group of two temples, one big and the other small, which is why it is called mother-in-law and daughter-inlaw temple.
Originally it’s derived from Shastrabahu means Thousand arms and later after deterioration it became Sas Bahu. Its architecture is of Nagara Style and work was commenced by King Ratanapala and it was completed by Mahipala in 1093 AD. These kings were called tortoise killers. Those who were under, or influenced by, the Chandela kings. As the Architectural grandeur and glorious style credit them. Garbhgrah Antarala space between Garbhgrah and Mahamandap and ardhmandapa with Exuberantly carved pillars and ceilings of Hall, Antarala, door jamb and frame, pillars and three side porches with balconies are excellent example of workmanship and visitors admire the complete construction. The exterior walls are richly carved with the floral motifs, geometrical motifs, Krishna Lila, musicians, dancers, elephants etc are major Sculpture and the small temple’s exterior is almost similar.
An inscription engraved on stone is placed in the portico of bigger temple with the details. As this temple was a venue for various religious rituals, gatherings etc.
These highly ornate temples were dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
