She was one of the first Indian female practitioners of Western medicine, graduating with an MD from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania (now part of the Drexel University College of Medicine) in 1886 at age 19. Driven by the loss of her infant child due to lack of medical care, she overcame immense social, physical, and financial barriers to pioneer medical education for women in India.
