Saaree- Six yards of sheer elegance!

Hello everyone!

Hope you all are doing great and all set for the weekend.

With this post, I am simply sharing my love for saarees- traditional Indian wear!

Saaree is Elegance! That’s right, if you have ever worn a saaree (perfectly called as Saadi in Marathi)/ seen someone in Saaree, you wouldn’t think twice to say that Elegance never goes out of style in Saaree!

  • As most of us know, Saaree is one of the most loved outfits in India and outside the world.

Saaree is literally considered the standard outfit for almost all occassions in Maharashtra. In recent years it has gone through tremendous timely updates in terms of modernization, bridal requirements and otherwise. Considering the diversity in ethnic wear amongst Indians, the basic patterns remain the same with variation across the states.

The most famous silk sarees are known to be an exclusive collection of Chennai followed by Benaras, Kanchipuram etc. Although the saarees from various states come in different designs and styles it is less known that they are actually manufactured from silk obtained from different silkworms. For example, Tussar silk is one of the finest silk obtained from cocoons of Antheraea paphia silkworm and manufactured in Bhagalpur (silk city). The other verieties include Mulberry, Eri and Muga silk with Mulberry silk being finest and costliest amongst all.

Few of the famous varieties of saaree includes Banarasi saaree, Patola, Paithani, Chanderi, Kasta/Nau-vari, Kanjivaram, Bandhani, Phulkari, Chikankari etc.

Being Maharashtrian, I am more familiar with Saha-vari and Nau-vari saarees.

Although there are subtle variations in saaree draping amongst various states in India, the basic technique (mostly) remains the same. The famous and very common Saha-vari is the typical way of saaree draping usually known to everyone followed by Nau-vari which just has some extra fabric to drape the saaree differently.

Saaree is for all occassions in Maharashtra! Usually weedings are more colourful with bright Saha-vari and nau-vari saarees not just in Maharashtra but throughout India.

If you have anything more to add to this, please do!

Looking gorgeous and brilliant article @Smita_Patil

Thank you for introducing the Saree to the Local Guides world in a graceful manner :+1:

Which one is your favorite?

I love visiting the places of origin and purchasing authentic sarees from there.

For example - I have traveled to Paithan, Chanderi in MP, Benaras, Mysuru, and Kanchipuram so far…

Many thanks @TusharSuradkar . I am glad to read that the post is gracefully introduced (since this was an odd topic :slightly_smiling_face: ).

If i understood correctly, the answer is plain silk sarees! They literally go with any occasion.

Good to know that you travel to the places of origin. It certainly is rare to get authentic stuff in commercial or tourist areas. I personally prefer the same. But I haven’t travelled to multiple places like you except to Chennai for Chennai silk.

And I wish to visit Paithan :slightly_smiling_face: Pathai being the most favourite amongst Maharashtrians.

Very happy and chill about this topic “Saree.” It is very useful and knew more things which never known about saarees in your state. Thank you for this valuable post.

:sri_lanka: Sri lankans are also called it as “Sari” or “Saree”. Sri lankan women usually wear it for official works, cultural functions. In 1960 to 2000 some women has wore saree at house hold works. But it rearly to see today.

Sri lankan women also wear “Kandian Saree” by using saree. It is specially using for bridal dressing.

Your post is very interesting @Smita_Patil !

I enjoyed it so much! Saarees are not so common here in Argentina, but I’ve seen them through movies or series and I think they are very beautiful. I like their colours and they fit great to all women.

Let me ask you a question… Do you wear them over other clothes or they are like dresses? I think I have seen some women using them over T-shirts.

Thanks for sharing this post with us!

Hey! Thanks a lot for responding to my post @Cecilita .

What an observation!!

Traditionally sarees are worn over a crop top called Blouse (specially designed to match with saaree) which is very very common and age old way of wearing it, however with swiftly changing fashion trends, sarees are being worn on casual tops/ T-shirts or even shirts now a days (specially crop tops with full sleeves). Stylish blouse is yet another topic and one might go crazy looking at the options. They can be designed as per the occasion and one’s demand. What I wear in my pictures is a basic crop top!

Once again thanks for your comment, it was really good to respond to such an interesting response!

Dear @Sophia_Cambodia , trust me, you will love it  I wish I can help you with that

Whoa!

Thank you for responding @Isanka . I learnt a new word from your comment- Kandyan saaree! I remember one of the dance videos of Yohani and Jacquelin, where Jacky wore this Kandyan saaree and it looked beautiful. Now I know that its called Kandyan saaree!

Well, good to know that saarees are still worn in your country for occassion.

Its never late @Rohan10 (just a dialogue)!

I understand now how time flies with little ones  They are so demanding!

Thank you so much again for your response again!
