Sometime last week I suddenly developed a craving for this local combo or taste. So I decided to try it today for a midday snack. It was quite nice.
It’s a very common sight on the streets Lagos-Nigeria when the plantain is in season. Roasted plantain on coals and peanuts. Plantain is a fruit really, a kind of banana with a different kind of flavour taste and size. It’s quite filling, although that depends on the whatever form you decide to prepare it I.e fried, boiled, or roasted like in this case. Its could serve as a snack if roasted and meal when boiled or deep fried in fat.
I have a little garden of plantain behind my kitchen here and I harvested it as seen in the pictures below.
I tried roasting it in the oven this time around instead of the normal method over the coal(like a grill). Its difficult to set the temperature really but it should be between 160-180°c. It takes a good while and it had to be watched and properly supervised otherwise it will burns quickly. I would say the coal fire method is still the best.
Aside been very edible for a snack or meal,it also has medicinal value. When boiled green (unripe form) it’s a very healthy meal for a diabetic patient. It’s full of Iron.
I hope you’ll like to try it someday on whichever form its a nutritious and healthy food.
WOW! it seems very easy to make this dish @SholaIB Can we use green banana instead of plantain? If yes, then what will be the recipe? Thanks for sharing this nice post of a delicious and healthy food. Regards.
I like roasted plantains, fried plantains, boiled plantains. We have a small plantation in my hometown so I deem it extravagant to buy plantains in large quantity outside though I do it sometimes when I have no choice.
I am drooling.
Thanks for sharing this amazing post with us here on connect.
By the way, traditional style of cooking is always the best.
Hi @Izumi . Do you like the dish as a whole or just the peanut? Well whichever way am glad you like the post and you also gave a nice reply. Do you have plantain in Japan I wonder?
Hello @Austinelewex . Yes it’s the same name we have for it in the west of Nigeria. It’s called Boli. In port Harcourt where I had my university education it’s also called boole and instead of peanuts they have very nice roasted fish and pepper sauce. I loved that as well but the most preferred one in this one!!!
Yes I agree with you the traditional style of roasting it is still the best. I couldn’t get that one so I just had to make do with what I have since I had the cravings for it.
Hello @MukulR yes you can use green plantain for it. Only it will be about hard, if you don’t mind the hardness it’s ok. The ripe one is soft and sweet. Please try it and let’s know the result. Thanks and cheers
Hello @Wei929 thank you for the nice comment. Glad you like the post. I live in an apartment here with an oven otherwise if I had a nice compound I’d prefer to do it the traditional way really. The coal instead of the gas. Whichever way it’s a nice dish.
Hello @_iwrotethesky That will be nice of you to try sometime and please let us know the outcome of it. It’s not difficult to try really it’s just a matter of roasting if you have ever roasted a chicken or pork or beef before. It’s the same technique.
Yes I had the roasted one yesterday it was good . It’s a local delicacy in west Africa so I had a craving for it and prepared it. Thanks for liking it man 🏾
