Review display system

Hello everyone!
I still don’t understand how a place’s review system works.
Are the reviews displayed in chronological order or maybe by the rank of the local guide?
Thanks so much!

Hello @Tonoz

You have a choice to sort the reviews on four different criteria, such as:

Most relevant

Latest

Highest rating

Lowest rating.

The most relevant are the ones selected by the automation based on merits & not on the ranking of a local guide. Candidly, I understand, there is no such ranking other than points and badges.
Further, anyone with a valid Google account can post a review & that stands an equal chance in comparison to one by an LG.
Thus, even if a non-LG person creates a passionate review, that can also become featured in the “most relevant” sort order.

PS. From the further communication, it appears that you want to understand why some reviews have more views as compared to others. The reasons are

The place happens to be a popular spot.

There aren’t many reviews, thus providing a chance for each one.

Some users may find your reviews to be captivating & then go through all your contributions. That’s more likely to happen after the introduction of the new feature “Following”.

Further, an increment in the view count does not necessarily mean that someone has read that. When a user accesses the review section, the server populates that with some finite number of entries in the “Most relevant” section & then every pull of data from server amounts to a view.

I didn’t make myself clear
I meant if by default, when a user searches for a place, how they view reviews.
I wondered because for some reviews I have few views, in others thousands.
Also: can the review be viewed simply by scrolling on it or when a user opens it to read it in its entirety?

Hello @Tonoz

Thanks for the further clarification.

I can’t comment on how other users search the review.

However, I can explain my response.

Most of the time, I skip reading reviews as that creates a bias.
Nevertheless, when I read, I use all the sort orders & read the top five or ten appearing in that.
That provides a flavour of the place.

The answer to why some reviews have more view count would be

The place happens to be a popular spot.

There aren’t many reviews, thus providing a chance for each one.

Hi @Tonoz

I believe Google Maps by default will try to order the reviews so the list will be as relevant to you as possible. This includes showing your own review first if you have made one. Secondly reviews made in your native language will be shown. This is very clear when traveling to other countries.

My 2 cents on your question.

Cheers
