Rekawa is in the south of the country in Tangalle. The beach is popular especially because it is the only beach left on the island giant sea turtles come to lay eggs in the dead of the night. There are many turtle hatcheries in Hikkaduwa as well but these are run by folks as tourist attractions. The beach is a protected area and no bright lights are allowed in the night because when turtles see the lights they don’t come to the shore to lay their eggs. The beach is pitch dark in the night.
Beside the turtles the Rekawa beach and the lagoon are awesome! The region is easily accessible via the Southern highway within 4 to 5 hours. The time consuming segment of the journey is from Matara to Rekawa because the highway extends only up to Matara. However, when the part of the highway from Matara to Hambanthota gets opened soon the whole journey will take less than 4 hours.
Rekawa beach with coconut palms is great for sunbathing but not for sea bathing because the sea is very rough here and there are undercurrents. However, there are a few safe places the locals will show you. Safe because of the natural rock barrier that shields this area from the big crashing waves.
The lagoon can be explored on a canoe which you can rent from a hotel. The best time to go canoeing in the lagoon is in the evening when it is cooler.
