When I was first diagnosed with Celiac disease, it felt like everything just flipped in a day. As someone who loves to travel and explore, my next biggest struggle was finding places to eat safely.
In the beginning, I felt all my confidence drop from the question how will I manage and that stopped me from travelling freely for a long time.
Even if I did, I always found myself carrying endless food everywhere, and still worried about getting sick if I tried anything outside.
It was then that I knew I wanted to solve this problem, not just for myself, but for anyone who was probably facing this and wishes to travel without the anxiety of how I will eat there, or if they will even be able to travel again like before. But with a severe lack of awareness in our country, this was not something that I found easily.
Accessibility looks different for everyone. To a wheelchair user, it means ramps and elevators. To someone with a visual impairment, it means tactile paving or audio cues. But as someone living with Celiac disease, accessibility means finding safe food and zero cross-contamination.
Because Google Maps doesn’t currently have a built-in “Celiac or gluten free” filter yet, I decided to use Google Maps to share about the places that I tried and found safe in different cities so that other people can find them easily and not have to worry as much.
We have already been building community pages, groups and master community resource sheets. Whereas this sheet compiles safe packaged foods to buy, emergency medical info, and travel tips, I decided to share my reviews on GMaps so the next person, even if they are not connected to those but travelling, can relax a little on their next trip.
I only share the places that I personally visit and have tried after having detailed conversations with the kitchen staff, whether it’s a dedicated gluten-free kitchen or a standard restaurant taking precautions. By this, I can’t guarantee a 100% risk-free experience, since restaurant practices, staff, and menus and even our reactions, change over time - but my goal is to share my genuine experience so that my fellow travellers have the confidence to explore again and leave the worry to enjoy their journey.
And know that THIS IS POSSIBLE…
Here are some of the places I visited and reviewed that I could find : (Udaipur, Jaipur, Rishikesh)
- Millets Of Mewar Restaurant
- Glutena- Gluten Free Food And Products
- Varyas Gluten Free Products
- Waraahi Restaurant
- The Vegan Room
- The Arches
Thank you @Tejal for motivating me to share this. ![]()
