Reciprocity in Google Maps - What is your Opinion?

Reciprocity is a relation or state in which two people or groups perform mutual or corresponding actions based on the actions of the other. (source: Dictionary.com).

Reciprocity is used in many Social Media to avoid what I call Social Voyeurism (watching others with a profile that is hidden or not accessible), following the principle that, if you are hidden, you cannot see me.

As I already said in other conversations, I love the opportunity to follow other Local Guides, as I can learn a lot from them, and the possibility of being followed. The last is for me an impulse to do better, as I know that others are watching my contributions.

BTW, I have a bit of discomfort when I see that some of the Local Guides who follow me have a locked (restricted) profile

I perfectly agree with the right of the privacy but, on the other side, I believe that, If I want to “Follow” someone, my profile should be Automatically Visible for the people I follow.

This is my opinion, of course, and I would love to read what you think about that.

I also wrote an Idea, where my proposal is more detailed: Profile of Followers should be automatically visible for the followed profiles

Another interesting reading that I want to suggest to everyone is: A note to the community: Let’s follow just good users on Google Maps written by @Amiran

I agree with you @ErmesT

Someone wanting to follow me should also allow me to follow them. It is certainly fair.

I checked to see if we can remove such profiles from my followers. We can’t.

Cheers

Morten

Well, you can’t choose your followers, @MortenCopenhagen , like I can’t, because our profiles are “publicly visible”, so I can’t remove them.

That’s exactly the purpose of this post: you can’t hide the profile for the people you follow.

It is like if you and me are in two different rooms: If we open the door, you see me, and I see you: If we close the door, I don’t want anyone watching from the keyhole

I completely agree with this. Also because in my opinion there is no reason to hide the profile for a Local Guide. LGs Mission is to help other people and how someone can do it efficiently if the profile is private?

Protecting the privacy is one of the priority of Google @RiccyB .

If you check my profile, you can clearly see where I do shopping, on which restaurants I go, etc. For someone this can be an issue, and they do not want to be “tracked back” starting from a single photo or review. I’m OK with this. But, if you want to see me, I have to be able (me, not everyone) to see you

So what exactly is it you want to see happen, @ErmesT ? A voluntry agreement between local guides or a system change implemented by Google?

Could you specify it further?

Cheers

Morten

Hello, I agree dear @ErmesT

This is the right of the user to see who wants to follow him/her.

Even sometimes the users have not a profile pic of themselves and have no individual name for their accounts, so when the contributing way is also hidden for us, we have no sense about who really wants to follow us. I voted to the idea.

I should also say thanks for mentioning the suggestion I posted. So proud to have your support.

The answer to your question in on the link at the end of my post, @MortenCopenhagen

I wrote an Idea, where my proposal is more detailed: Profile of Followers should be automatically visible for the followed profiles

Hi @ErmesT ,

I agree with you, the follow should open automatically the private profile for the followers, at least to be fair just like @MortenCopenhagen mentioned. Let’s have a look for example at LinkedIn, you can’t see who visited your profile if you don’t allow others to see you visited theirs … fair enough.

However there might be also different visions if you think for example at Instagram and Twitter, people can follow you but if the account is private you need to anyway request to follow them also if they are your followers otherwise you won’t see anything. This is more privacy oriented rather than content sharing as Local Guide might be.

To better explain my previous answer, @MortenCopenhagen , I am asking Google to implement the “Following” procedure using the reciprocity principles: if you want to see me, you must be aware that on the meantime I will see you. If you don’t want to be seen, you can’t see.

Do you remember how the “online status” of WhatsApp work, just to make an example?

If you hide your online status, you will not be able to see the online status of your contacts.

Btw, as a public profile is in any case visible, I want to implement this only to the “following” function, because when you follow someone you received the information of his contribution on the "updates’ of your Google Maps App

Thanks, @ErmesT

You had forgotten to add the link back to here in your idea.

I’m wondering what happens if we temporarily make our profile private. Do we lose current followers? If not, I would guess we could kick private followers and then reopen our own profiles again. This is not a proper solution but a potential, temporary workaround until the problem is fixed.

Cheers

Morten

The link in the idea is present @MortenCopenhagen

I had of course to make an edit because this thread was ready but not posted yet, when you liked the idea (you are fast, isn’t it?) and I was adding the link on the meantime.

I believe we can talk about the technical aspects on the idea itself, while this post is more about the principle of reciprocity than the technical actuation.

I think that, if you change the status of your profile everything should go “oh hold”, with an information (“oh hold”, or “paused”) on the “following” indication on the app

@ErmesT

It is spooky when I see that a local guide having a locked profile can follow me.

This happens all the time on other social media platforms like FB an Insta.

So let LG Connect take the lead and be a trendsetter for others to follow in steps.

People can follow you on Instagram @LuigiZ , if your account is public, but you have an option to block a profile, or to hide some content for specific people only

I completely agree @ErmesT , I voted your idea.

Hi @ErmesT !

I immediately clarify that I, at the moment, cannot follow any profiles, so for the moment I only know what is reported here on Connect and from @MortenCopenhagen @LuigiZ and other LocalGuides here in this post.

I approve of your point of view: it’s about mutual trust which is the basis of LocalGuides!
We must have nothing to hide and we must always give the best to the Community.

Of course, privacy plays an increasingly important role in these times, and frankly, perhaps it would bother me a little if someone starts to make an account of all the places I have visited.

So the ideal would be to have the reciprocity of open profiles, but also to limit or leave free choice to LocalGuide whether the new review, new photos or any other new contribution is to be notified to the other LocalGuides or not!

Let me give a practical example: if I went to eat in the new FastFood and then leave a review and related photos, I would like it to be up to me to notify those who follow me about my new contribution!
Otherwise everyone can think: but look at this @davidhyno , he goes to eat every week in a new fast food … now I understand why he has such a big belly! :unamused:
(Obviously the characters shown here are only fictional and have nothing to do with the example) :joy:
Of course, these contributions will always be visible in my profile, but at least they will not be detected at all so with great fanfare!

And then I will have the choice of enhancing those noteworthy contributions or those that particularly impressed me and of which I really intend to let everyone know!

However I hope to have the opportunity to be able to follow and be followed as soon as possible and that, over time and with all our ideas, this feature can always improve over time!

Bye,
David

Your example is hilarious, @davidhyno , but true, and I agree with you, and I can understand that sometimes we don’t want to share our reviews…

In any case, you can follow others already, even if you cannot be followed yet.

The function still rolling up, and also some Connect Moderator can’t be followed. It is just a matter of time…

@ErmesT

Nice

Ah ah @ErmesT hilarious but true! :yum:

You said " In any case, you can follow others already, even if you cannot be followed yet." : but unfortunately I don’t have that chance yet (I’m on iOS system) so I just have to wait.

(Here is an example of a LocalGuide taken at random and for which I do not see the possibility of choosing to follow it!)

So I assume no one can follow me yet right? Can you follow my profile?

Bye,

David
